Lacrosse Drops Home Game to Young Harris

WISE - - Young Harris scored the opening 10 goals of the game en route to a 22-9 non-conference NCAA Division II women's lacrosse victory over UVA Wise at Smith Stadium Saturday.

A trio of Young Harris (1-2) netted a hat trick in the win. Sierra Haas and Aubrie Valvo scored five goals each while Taylor Greenberg added four goals as the visitors picked up their first win of 2021.

Valvo scored four of her five goals in the opening 17 minutes of the game as UVA Wise (0-2) struggled to win the draw control early. The Panthers won 10-of-15 draw controls in the opening half as the team built an 11-3 halftime edge.

Meghan Dennehy's Cavaliers got on the board with 7:31 to play in the first half when Katie Allen scored unassisted. Moments later, Jesse French scored to cut the deficit to 10-2 before Young Harris responded with a goal from Kinsley Purser to make it an 11-2 affair. A goal by UVA Wise's Mallory Trimble sent the game to the locker room with her club trailing by eight.

It would be as close as the Cavs would get as the Panthers scored three of the first four goals of the second half to take complete control of the game.

French finished with her second hat trick of the season as she tallied three goals, Allen added a pair of goals while Kailey Lacey also scored twice. Trimble and Ellie Earnshaw scored a goal each in the loss.

Kameryn Darrington picked up six groundballs and Sydney Trask added five draw controls for UVA Wise.

Valvo picked up 12 draw controls in addition to her game-high five goals, teammate Ella Hancock added five groundballs for the victors.

For the Cavs, next up is a trip to Wingate next Saturday for the conference opener. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
