Cavs Hit Road to Face Mars Hill Monday

Storylines – vs mars hill

First-year coach Briana Clark has not had the season she had envisioned. Mars Hill is just 2-15 and is in the midst of a four-game losing streak. Despite this, the Lions could play the role of spoiler Monday when Jamie Cluesman brings her Cavaliers to town. A bright spot all season for Mars Hill has been the play of 5-foot-7 senior guard De'Ja Marshall. Marshall leads the team and ranks second in the South Atlantic Conference in scoring at 19.9 points per game. The guard put on a show in the Prior Center the first time Mars HIll and UVA Wise met this season. That day, Marshall scored 19 points and grabbed 19 rebounds. On the season, she is averaging 12.5 rebounds a contest to rank second in the league. Outside of Marshall, scoring has been an issue for the Lions. The team enters Monday's tilt 11th in the league in scoring at 63.4 points per game while ranking 11th in field goal percentage at 37.6 percent. During the current four-game losing streak, Mars Hill has been outscored by an average of 27.2 points per game. Most recently, the team dropped a 99-61 decision to Carson-Newman Thursday.

About UVA Wise

UVA Wise will look to bounce back from Saturday's 75-53 loss to Wingate. Cluesman's crew suffered through its worst shooting day of the season, making just 3-of-28 attempts from beyond the 3-point line while shooting 33.8 percent overall. The Cavs also struggled to rebound the basketball; the Bulldogs claimed the battle of the boards 51-to-29. THe number included 18 offensive rebounds for Wingate who was led by Bryanna Troutman's 15 points and 20 rebounds. Nia Vanzant was a bright spot for UVA Wise. The sophomore reached the 20-point mark for the second consecutive game as she netted 13 of her 20 points in the second half. Caitlyn Ross had an efficient game for the Cavs as she made 5-of-9 field goal attempts en route to 10 points. The guard grabbed five rebounds, dished out six assists and racked up three steals without committing a turnover. A trip to Mars Hill may be the remedy for the UVA Wise offense. Earlier this season, the Cavs throttled the Lions 101-69 in Wise. The 101 points are the most scored by UVA Wise this season as Hanna Oliver tied a single-game school record with eight made 3-pointers in the win. Oliver scored 26 points that game while Vanzant added 25 and Kalee Johnson chipped in 19. The Cavs clobbered the Lions on the boards that day, winning the rebounding battle 54-38, scoring 22 second chance points in the process. Saturday's loss dropped UVA Wise to fourth in the league standings, the team will likely need to win out and get some help if they are to receive a bye in the upcoming league tournament.
