WISE - - Sophomore Caitlyn Ross scored a career-high 28 points as UVA Wise snapped a two-game losing skid with a 73-61 win over Queens University of Charlotte at Curry Arena Saturday afternoon.
UVA Wise (11-3, 10-3 SAC) outscored Queens (1-13, 1-11 SAC) 23-8 in the second quarter to take a 14- point lead to intermission.
Junior Mackenzie King was pivotal in what proved to be the decisive stretch. The Harlan, Ky. product scored 10 of her 12 points in the quarter as she made a pair of 3-pointers in the period while also going 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
Ross would push the Cavaliers lead to 16 points when she scored the first points of the second half. The bucket by Ross would preclude a 7-0 scoring run by the Royals that saw Kalaya Hall score four points during the stretch.
The lead would eventually shrink to four with 3:56 to play in the third period when Amari Davis scored off of a Hall assist. The basket capped a second 7-0 scoring spurt by Queens, but it would be as close as the hosts would get.
Ross and Hall would trade buckets to leave the advantage at four only to see UVA Wise scored seven of the final 10 points of the stanza to head to the fourth quarter leading 52-44.
It would be Ross that put the game on ice in the final 10 minutes. The Kingston, Tenn. native was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor in the final 10 minutes as she netted 10 of her game-high 28 points to aid her squad to its fourth consecutive victory over the Royals.
Hall did her best to keep Queens close throughout the contest. The guard made a quartet of 3-pointers en route to a team-high 23 points.
The Royals left some points on the table as Jen Brown's team finished the game 11-of-21 from the free throw line. Queens also struggled to put the ball in the basket from beyond the arc; the Royals made just 6-of-25 3-point field goal attempts in the contest.
UVA Wise won the battle of the boards thanks to a strong rebounding effort out of its guards. Nia Vanzant corralled a career-high 12 rebounds as part of a double-double performance. The sophomore added 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting for her first double-double of the season.
Ross picked up eight rebounds as the two starting guards combined for 20 of the team's 43 rebounds to finish the game with four more rebounds.
Davis (15) and Christina Deng (11) joined Hall in double figure scoring for Queens who dropped its sixth consecutive contest.
Next up for the Cavs, a trip to Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday. The Bears scored a double overtime victory over Anderson Saturday. UVA Wise will be going for the season-series sweep in the game, Jamie Cluesman's crew outlasted Lenoir-Rhyne 70-63 earlier this season.
