Cavaliers Try to Get Back on Track at Queens

Storylines – vs Queens

First-year coach Jen Brown will try to score the biggest win of her young coaching career Saturday when Queens entertains UVA Wise in a SAC women's basketball contest. The Royals are just 1-12 on the season with the lone win coming against Mars Hill on Jan. 30. Since then, Queens has lost five consecutive games by an average of 31.4 points per game. Brown's team is coming off a narrow defeat, however. Wednesday the team fell 69-61 to Coker despite 20 points from Kalaya Hall. Hall netted 16 points against UVA Wise earlier this season while teammate Christina Deng poured in a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. This season, Hall leads the team in scoring at 15.8 points per game while Deng is averaging 8.4 points and 7.1 rebounds a night. A player to watch could be freshman Amari Davis. The Charlotte native has scored in double figures in three of the last five games, including a season-high 18 against Lincoln Memorial earlier this month. Most recently, the 5-foot-10 forward poured in 16 points against Coker. The game with UVA Wise is the third of a four-game home stand for the Royals. Queens finishes the season by playing three of its final four regular season games away from Charlotte.

About UVA Wise

UVA Wise will look to snap a two-game losing streak when the team travels to Queens Saturday. The Cavaliers lost a 92-89 thriller Wednesday to nationally ranked Carson-Newman. In the loss, sophomore guard Caitlyn Ross put together arguably the best game of her collegiate career. Ross netted 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out a career-high 14 assists in 40 minutes of action.  The triple double was the second of Ross' career and the 14 assists marked the second time this season the Kingston, Tenn. native reached the number. Senior forward Kalee Johnson also had a career performance. The 5-foot-11 Johnson scored a career-high 28 points while collecting 12 rebounds en route to her fourth consecutive double-double. Saturday, the Cavaliers will be going for the season-series sweep of the Royals and fourth consecutive win in the series. In the first meeting, UVA Wise forced 27 Queens turnovers and turned the extra possessions into 32 points on the offensive end. A total of 12 Cavs scored in the win while freshman Peyton Sams finished with a season-high nine assists and five steals. As a team, Jamie Cluesman's crew dished out 22 assists with six players having multiple assists in the home triumph.
