CAVS SEND WOLVES BACK TO WILDERNESS WITH STIFLING DEFENSE

WISE - - Five Cavaliers scored in double-figures, led by Caitlyn Ross' game-high 14 points as UVA Wise scored its third consecutive South Atlantic Conference victory with a 67-54 win over Newberry at the Prior Center Wednesday.

Playing on her 21st birthday, Ross was steady all night for UVA Wise (3-4, 3-2 SAC). The Kingston, Tenn. product logged all 40 minutes and her 3-pointer at the first quarter horn sent her team to the second period with a 14-12 advantage.

Newberry (1-5, 1-4 SAC) would use a 7-0 scoring spurt to take a 19-16 lead at the seven-minute mark of the second quarter when Tyla Stolberg scored off of a Giulia Bongiorno assist. The run by the Wolves was answered by a 9-0 scoring run from the Cavs. The stretch featured a pair of buckets by reigning SAC Player of the Week Nia Vanzant, Kalee Johnson and Ross.

It would prove to be a decisive run as Newberry would not again lead in the contest. The Wolves struggled with the Cavs defense all evening in what to date is the best defensive performance of the season for Jamie Cluesman's crew. Newberry was limited to 24.7 percent shooting for the game, including a 4-for-28 shooting from beyond the arc. Over a 20-minute stretch between the second and third quarters, the Wolves made just 1-of-13 attempts from beyond the arc.

Behind the strong defensive effort, the UVA Wise lead would swell to double digits in the third quarter. Junior guard Jaymi Golden provided the second half spark for the Cavs after playing sparingly in the opening half due to picking up two early fouls. The Clinton, Tenn. native netted all ten of her points in the final 20 points while adding a quartet of assists and a pair of rebounds.

Newberry put forth one final surge by scoring the first five points of the fourth quarter only to see two baskets by Golden and a layup by Ross quickly pushed the lead back to ten.

Six-foot-three center Meg Golden put forth her best all-around performance of the season in the win. Crawford connected on 5-of-9 field goal attempts en route to 12 points while adding ten rebounds and four blocks in 29 minutes of action. Johnson finished a rebound shy of a double-double as the forward recorded 13 points and three steals. Vanzant posted her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds on 6-of-10 shooting.

Newberry was paced by Stolberg who finished with13 points and eight rebounds in what was the team's fourth consecutive defeat.

With the win, the Cavs improve to 3-1 all-time against the Wolves and remain undefeated in the series inside the Prior Center. The game was the final of a three-game home stand for UVA Wise, who went 3-0 during the stretch.

Next up, Cluesman's crew will go for its first road victory of the season Saturday in Coker. Tip-off from Hartsville, S.C. is set for 2 p.m.
