WISE, VA — the UVA Wise Highland Cavaliers ran into a buzzsaw against the Newberry Wolves on Wednesday night, who took a lead at the 12:08 mark and never looked back, taking the win by a score of 79-58.
The UVA Wise Highland Cavaliers (07, 0-5 SAC) found themselves at a 10-9 lead early in the first half in part by back-to-back Isaiah McAmis three-pointers, but the lead was short-lived as a Newberry jumper changed the course of the game. Ben Bryson of the Cavs made a response with a swift layup, but the Wolves were able to outscore the Cavs 16-5 over the next eight minutes to finish off the half.
After a trip to the locker room, Newberry came out as aggressive as they did in the first half and by the 10:02 mark, the Wolves had snagged their largest lead of the night over the Cavs by 28 points. Three Wolves — TJ Brown, Quandaveon McCollum, and Marcus Ford — all put up double digits with seven minutes to go in the game.
The Cavaliers attempted to crawl back from their deficit, but the Wolves sank two consecutive jumpers by Booker Cusaac to essentially write off the win by 21 points.
The Cavs only connected on 22 of 64 shots from the field, and only hit nine of 33 from the arc. Once again, the Cavs displayed a huge improvement from the charity stripe from their most recent matchup against Tusculum, shooting 71.4 percent.
McAmis led the night for the Cavs with 15 points, while Kervens Yacinthe trailed right behind him with 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Brown of the Wolves also put up 15 points, and teammate McCollum put up 12 of his own.
The Cavs will head on the road next to play Coker University on Saturday, with a 4:00 p.m. tipoff.
