THIRD QUARTER RUN TOO MUCH TO OVERCOME, TROJANS TOP CAVS

ANDERSON, S.C. - - Host Anderson scored the final 15 points of the third quarter as part of a 25-0 scoring spurt to overcome a five-point halftime deficit en route to a 61-40 victory over UVA Wise in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action at the Abney Athletic Center Saturday.

UVA Wise (0-4, 0-2 SAC) led for the bulk of the first half and was up seven at 32-25 with 8:38 to play in the third quarter.

Anderson (2-2, 2-0 SAC) would be behind 36-31 when Kalee Johnson scored inside to extend the visitors lead at the 5:48 mark of the third quarter before the Trojans embarked on the game-changing scoring run.

Diamond McDowell would give the hosts the lead for good when she converted a traditional 3-point play with 3:51 showing on the third quarter clock.

McDowell was one of four Trojans who scored in the third quarter. McDowell netted six of her game-high 15 points in the quarter while Xan Rowland six points, Britney Bailey chipped in five points and Neliah Wilson tallied four points.

When the run concluded, Anderson had turned a five-point deficit into a 20-point lead. The Trojans held the Cavs to just ten second half points on 4-of-28 shooting. Meanwhile, Anderson made 14-of-30 field goal attempts over the final 20 minutes after making just 9-of-28 shots in the opening half.

McDowell added 14 rebounds to her game-high 15 points to spur a rebounding effort that saw the Trojans enjoy a 54-to-34 advantage on the glass.

Nia Vanzant led UVA Wise with 12 points to keep her streak alive of scoring in double-figures in every game thus far this season.

The game ended a season-opening four-game road trip for the Cavs. Jamie Cluesman's team opens the home portion of its schedule Tuesday when Mars Hill visits the Prior Center in a 5:30 p.m. tip.
