HARTSVILLE, S.C. – UVA Wise dropped its first league matchup of 2021 Friday night at Coker, 83-70. Four players scored in double-figures for the Cavaliers (0-4, 0-4) led by junior Cameron Whiteside who posted a game-high 21 points on 50 percent shooting from the field and added five rebounds.
Junior Kaeleb Carter finished with 16 points, going 3-for-5 from downtown. Redshirt junior Briggs Parris netted a season-high 13 points while freshman Isaiah McAmis posted a season-high 10 points and made his first career start.
Coker (3-2, 3-2) opened the game with a 6-0 run through the first two minutes before McAmis connected on a three to get the scoring going for the Cavs.
Trailing by five points, Whiteside knocked down a pair of free throws to pull the Cavs within three, 16-13 with a little under 11 minutes on the clock. Back-to-back three's by Parris gave UVA Wise its first lead of the night at the 7:36 mark as the Cavs held a 21-19 advantage.
The Cobras quickly pulled back in front, gaining a 12-point lead with less than two minutes in the first. Coker took the advantage into the break, up 43-33 at halftime.
UVA Wise started the second half with another three by McAmis as the Cavs tried to claw back. Two more free throws for Whiteside later in the half put the Cavs down by three, 48-45, at the 14:31 mark.
Coker extended its lead to double-digits once more before a three-pointer by Carter put the deficit back in single-digits for UVA Wise midway through the second frame.
The Cobras managed to score 14 unanswered points to pull ahead 79-58 with 5:47 to play.
UVA Wise closed out the game with a 10-2 run, but it would not be enough as the Cobras secured the win.
Coker had four players score in double figures led by Ryan Carfley and Malcolm Kennedy who each registered 14 points. Chandler Lindsay added a game-high 10 rebounds. The Cobras shot 57.1 percent from the field and 50 percent from downtown on the night. Coker went 8-for-12 (66.7 percent) at the free throw line.
The Cavs finished shooting 40.7 percent (22-for-54) from the field and 33.3 percent (8-for-24) from three-point range. UVA Wise connected on 18-of-23 shots (78.3 percent) at the charity stripe and pulled down 20 boards.
Freshman Ben Bryson added a season-high seven points with two steals while redshirt sophomore Joseph Keenan knocked down in the game.
In his debut, freshman Bradley Dean recorded two assists and added four boards.
Head coach Blake Mellinger's team will return to the court tomorrow at Coker for a 4:30 p.m. tip.
