UVA Wise Leads Wire-To-Wire in Win Over LMU

WISE - - Winning has become contagious for the women's basketball program at UVA Wise. Jamie Cluesman's team saw four players reach double figures with two recording a double-double Wednesday in the team's 78-63 South Atlantic Conference victory over Lincoln Memorial University at the Prior Center. The win is the seventh in a row for the Cavaliers who have not lost since the season opener on Nov. 24.

UVA Wise (7-1, 7-1 SAC) led wire-to-wire in the win and used its defense to jump out to a 13-9 lead after the opening period. LMU (5-4, 4-4 SAC) would connect on just 3-of-10 field goal attempts in the first quarter while turning the ball over seven times.

The strong defensive effort would continue for the hosts in the second quarter as redshirt junior Meg Crawford would enter the contest and immediately make her impact felt.

Crawford blocked three of her career-high seven shots in the period while netting 12 of her game-high 23 points in the stretch.

The center's strong play sparked a 24-point quarter for UVA Wise who entered halftime holding a 37-24 lead.

The early deficit and foul trouble proved to be too much to overcome for the Railsplitters who began the third quarter in massive foul trouble. Jordan Maney was whistled for four first half fouls while Grace Day was assessed three personal fouls in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Both Maney and Day would foul out in the second half with Maney registering just six minutes of game action.

Balanced scoring and sharp shooting was the story of the third period for the Cavs who made 9-of-16 field goal attempts and saw six players enter the scoring column in the 10-minute stretch. Kalee Johnson tallied six of her 17 points in the stretch while Caitlyn Ross scored six of her 10 points in the time period.

LMU would be unable to get the game within single digits at any point in the second half as the visitors saw their two-game winning streak snapped.

Crawford finished the game 10-of-14 from the floor with a career-high 23 points in additions to her career-high block total. Johnson finished with a double-double for the second consecutive game with 17 points and 10 rebounds while adding five assists and four steals to her stat line. Ross tied a career-high with 13 assists and Nia Vanzant continued her strong play with 16 points and five assists.

The 13 assists by Ross are the most by any player in NCAA Division II this season, tying her own single-game high from earlier this season when she dished out 13 assists against Mars Hill.

LMU was led by Lindsay Proffitt and Lauren Flowers who scored 14 points each, Day and Lexi Kiser chipped in 12 points each.

The 7-1 start to the season is the best for UVA Wise since joining NCAA Division II while the seven-game winning streak is the longest for the program in the NCAA Division II era.

The Cavs will be off until Monday when the team faces off with the Railsplitters again this time in Harrogate, Tenn. Tip from Tex Turner Arena is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
