Winners of Four Straight, Cavs Host Bears Wednesday

Storylines – vs LR

Lenoir-Rhyne is coming off its first win of the season, a 63-54 triumph at home over Lincoln Memorial. In the win, freshman Emily Harman tied a season-high with 20 points while Hanna McClung (15) and Blaikley Crooks (11) also reached double figures. The Bears shot 64 percent from the floor in the fourth quarter in the win while holding the Railsplitters to 7-of-25 shooting from the 3-point line. LR is under the direction of first-year coach Grahm Smith who came to Hickory after spending two seasons at NCAA Division III William Peace where he guided the school the NCAA Tournament last season. Overall, Smith has won 136 games and is in his eighth season of collegiate coaching. Fans following the game may see a familiar name on the Bears' roster. LR junior Taylor Cullen is the younger sister of former UVA Wise guard Ashley Cullen (2015-2019) who was a four-year letter winner for the Cavaliers.

Receiving votes in the latest D2SIDA Southeast Region Poll and in the midst of a four-game winning streak, UVA Wise is playing its best basketball in recent history. The Cavaliers have had two women earn SAC Player of the Week honors this season, including Nia Vanzant who is the reigning award winner. Vanzant averaged 23 points and five rebounds in a pair of wins last week and ranks fifth in the conference in scoring at 16.8 points per game. The sophomore enters Wednesday's game with 498 career points, meaning she will likely the reach the 500-point plateau in just her 34th career game. Fellow sophomore and backcourt mate Caitlyn Ross is posting some impressive numbers as well. Ross leads the league and ranks fifth nationally in assists per game at 7.2 while averaging 14.8 points per game. Redshirt senior Kalee Johnson cracked double figures for the fourth consecutive game with a 14-point, 15-rebound outing. The 15 rebounds are a career-high for Johnson who played all 40 minutes in the 87-70 win at Coker. Senior Hanna Oliver has had the hot shooting hand, the Woodbridge, Va. native has made 12 shots from beyond the arc in the last two games and has made multiple 3-pointers in four of the season's first five games. As a team, UVA Wise is near the top nationally in several categories. Jamie Cluesman's team is top ten nationally in assists per game (3rd), blocked shots per game (5th), assist-to-turnvoer ratio (5th) and scoring offense (5th).UVA Wise is scheduled to play four of its next five games at home. Thus far, the team is 2-0 at home and is outscoring opponents by 19.5 points per game in the Prior Center.
