Cavs Welcome Eagles for Senior Night

Storylines – vs carson-newman University

Mike Mincey's Eagles come in a win away from their fourth consecutive 20-win season. Carson-Newman is ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Rankings and in prime position to earn an at large bid to next month's NCAA Tournament. The team is led by Kayla Marosites who is averaging 17.8 points and 12.2 rebounds per game while shooting 88.7 percent from the foul line over 124 attempts. Braelyn Wykle has also been one of the league's better scorers, netting 17.4 points per game. Mincey's squad is in the midst of a pretty good run having won five of its last six contests, including a 97-53 thumping of Queens at home Saturday. In that contest, Marosites scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Carson-Newman made 15 3-pointers. The 3-point shot has been lethal for the Eagles who have made 10 or more shots from beyond the arc in 17 games this season. Carson-Newman leads the conference and ranks second nationally in made 3-pointers at 11.4 per game. The long distance shooting has aided the team to a league-leading 84.9 points per game. The number ranks sixth nationally while also leading the Southeast Region in scoring. The Eagles still have hope for a share of a league title, Carson-Newman is two games behind Anderson for the league lead while being a game back of Catawba for second and being tied with Tusculum for third place.

About UVA Wise

UVA Wise will honor its lone senior Cynita Webb prior to tip Wednesday as Jamie Cluesman's team will square off with Carson-Newman in need of a win to keep pace with Lenoir-Rhyne for the final South Atlantic Conference Tournament berth. Freshman Caitlyn Ross is 18 assists shy of the single-assist record of 171 set by Amber Carter in the 2010-11 season. Ross has had a marvelous freshman campaign as she is the only player in the country that has scored at least 340 points, grabbed 130 rebounds, dished out 150 assists and collected 60 or more steals. Fellow freshman Nia Vanzant has become the teams most consistent scorer down the stretch. The guard has scored in double figures in seven consecutive games while averaging 20.5 points per game during the span. In the first meeting between the two schools, UVA Wise struggled to stop Carson-Newman as the Eagles scored 100 points in the win. For the Cavs, redshirt junior Kaylee Johnson spurred the offense as she netted a team-high 22 points while Ross added 21 points and 11 assists. Junior Hanna Oliver chipped in 10 points but the team was unable to overcome 18 made 3-pointers by the Eagles. Webb who had her season cut short due to injury will finish her career 17th in school history with 1,053 career points.
