Hot Shooting Bears Drop Cavalier Women

HICKORY, N.C. - - Karlie Bearden made 12-of-15 field goal attempts to net a game-high 24 points as Lenoir-Rhyne took sole possession of eighth place with an 86-70 South Atlantic Conference win over UVA Wise Wednesday evening. With the win, the Bears hold the tiebreaker over the Cavaliers and hold a game lead for the eighth and final SAC Tournament berth.

UVA Wise (11-14, 7-12 SAC) point guard Caitlyn Ross played just 21 minutes in the loss as she was riddled with foul trouble and eventually fouled out early in the fourth quarter.

The lack of the Cavs primary ball handler opened the door and Lenoir-Rhyne (10-15, 8-11 SAC) pounced as the Bears forced 20 turnovers, turning the turnovers into 30 points.

LR shot a blistering 56.7 percent for the game, including an 11-for-16 showing in the first 10 minutes. The Bears had three players make multiple 3-pointers as the hosts connected on 8-of-19 shots from distance.

The decisive stretch in the contest came over the final four minutes of the opening quarter. After Nia Vanzant hit a 3-pointer to give UVA Wise a 12-11 lead, LR would close the period on a 14-6 run that was highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers, one each by Blair Barefoot and Laney Fox.

With its lead built to 25-18, the Bears kept the Cavs at length behind solid shooting. LR followed up its 25-point first quarter with a 21-point second quarter to take a 46-37 lead to intermission.

LR put the game out of reach with a 16-to-7 scoring spurt in the third quarter that saw the lead bulge to 67-49 with 2:59 to play in the third quarter.

From there, UVA Wise would be unable to get the lead back within single digits as LR pushed the lead to as many as 23 points with 5:39 to play.

Three Cavs finished in double figures in the loss, Vanzant finished with a team-high 17 points while Ada Stanley netted 15 points and Kalee Johnson chipped in 12 points in the loss.

Kennedy Weigt finished with 10 points to be the only other Bear in double figure scoring.

Next up, UVA Wise entertain Wingate in a 2 p.m. tip Saturday from the Prior Center.
