WINGATE, N.C. – UVA Wise dropped its second league road game of the season Wednesday night in a 98-86 loss to Wingate University.
Junior guard Cameron Whiteside recorded his seventh career game scoring 30 or more points as he joined the men's basketball program's 1,000-point club with his team-high 33 points on 12-of-20 shooting. He becomes the 37th men's basketball player to reach the milestone, collecting 1,028 points to date to rank 35th on the list
Sophomore forward Izeah Parker notched his first career double-double with a career-high 13 points and 11 rebounds on the night while fellow sophomore Drew Greene added 10 points to the mix while going 6-for-6 at the line in the game.
UVA Wise (0-2, 0-2 SAC) trailed early to start the game as redshirt junior Briggs Parris knocked down a three to cut the Bulldogs lead to 14-10 at the 15:54 mark.
With 11:19 on the clock, a jumper in the paint by Parker tied the contest for the fifth time at 21-21.
The two teams traded baskets before Wingate (2-2, 2-2 SAC) managed to pull away with a seven-point lead with 4:55 left in the half, 35-28.
A quick 11-1 run regained the lead for the Cavs with just under two minutes to go in the opening half as the Bulldogs trailed, 39-38.
UVA Wise capitalized on opportunities at the free throw line to close out the frame, taking a 45-42 advantage into the break.
The Cavs outscored the Bulldogs in the paint 18-16 to open the game while UVA Wise posted 16 points off of 10 first half miscues for Wingate.
Both teams shot 75 percent from the charity stripe in the opening half while Whiteside led all scorers with 16 points.
Junior Kaeleb Carter and Whiteside combined for the Cavs first eight points of the second half to put UVA Wise ahead by two, 53-51, with less than 17 minutes to play.
Cavalier turnovers aided the Bulldogs to their first double-digit lead of the night, up 69-59 with 10:42 on the clock.
Wingate led by as many as 13 points before UVA Wise managed to cut it to single digits to trail by seven, 84-77, with 5:21 left.
The Cavs tried to rally late but were unable to score down the stretch as the Bulldogs gained their second conference win of the campaign.
Wingate put up 34 points in the paint compared to 16 for UVA Wise in the second half while the Bulldogs added 24 points off of turnovers.
UVA Wise shot 46.7 percent (28-for-60) from the floor in the loss. The team went 22-for-27 (81.5 percent) at the line and connected on 8-of-21 shots (38.1 percent) from three-point range.
The Cavs racked up 23 total turnovers while outrebounding the Bulldogs 39-35 in the game.
Wingate's Jarren Cottingham finished with a game-high 34 points while three more Bulldogs registered double-digit points.
Head coach Blake Mellinger's squad will be back on the road this weekend for a 2 p.m. SAC contest at Carson-Newman University.
