For the second consecutive game, UVA Wise will face a team with a first-year head coach. Melissa DeVore was named head coach at Coker in October after being an assistant at Limestone since 2006. An accomplished collegiate player who earned all-league honors as a senior guard, DeVore has coached six All-Americans and aided Limestone to a 304-123 record during her time as an assistant. Coker dropped its season opener 68-55 against Lincoln Memorial Tuesday as the Cobras turned the ball over 31 times in the contest. In total, the game featured 57 turnovers as Coker forced 26 LMU turnovers. Saquita Joyner led the way for the Cobras with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Raya Coley added 12 points and Emily Davis chipped in 10 points. Coker was picked 11th in the Preseason SAC Coaches' Poll and is coming off a 10-16 season that saw the Cobras post a 7-15 mark in league play. Tuesday's game is the first of three straight on the road for Coker who has already had two games postponed.
UVA Wise will look to bounce back from its season opening loss at Tusculum when Coker visits the Prior Center Saturday. Sophomore guard Caitlyn Ross scored a team-high 20 points against the Pioneers while center Meg Crawford had a big impact in her UVA Wise debut. The 6-foot-3 Crawford scored 16 points and blocked three shots in just 14 minutes of action. Rebounding and free throw shooting proved to be a problem Tuesday as the Cavaliers lost the battle of the boards 53-to-34 while shooting just 52.2 percent from the charity stripe. Crawford's fellow front court mate Ada Stanley was also a bright spot in defeat, the senior tallied 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals in 31 minutes of work. UVA Wise was also steady from beyond the arc, Jamie Cluesman's squad connected on 8-of-19 3-point field goal attempts as Ross and Hanna Oliver made three each. The trio of 3-pointers by Oliver give her 157 made 3-pointers in her career, the most of any active Cavalier. Nia Vanzant posed problems for Coker, a year ago. The guard scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the home win before tossing in 25 points in the game at Coker. Saturday's game will be one of only two inside the Prior Center before the close of 2020 for UVA Wise, the Cavs will play four of their first six games of the season on the road. Last season, UVA Wise was 8-5 at home, while posting a 4-11 record in road/neutral site affairs. Â
