Cavalier Men Face No. 3 Lincoln Memorial Wednesday Night


Storylines – vs. Lincoln Memorial University
The nationally-ranked Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University host UVA Wise Wednesday night inside the Tex Turner Arena. Ranked sixth in the D2SIDA poll and third in the NABC poll, LMU currently boasts a 13-1 overall mark, going undefeated since their season-opening loss, and are 6-0 in conference play so far this season.  In his 12th season with the team, head coach Josh Schertz's squad is averaging 93.2 points per game at a +25.7 scoring margin over opponents. From the field, the Railsplitters are shooting 52.1 percent and averaging 33.4 field goals per game. Picked second in the South Atlantic preseason coaches poll, LMU secured three first place votes and two preseason all-conference selections in senior Anthony Brown and redshirt senior Kamaran Calhoun who were both named to the All-SAC First Team. The Railsplitters concluded last year with a 20-9 overall mark and went 14-6 in the league.  This season, the team is led in scoring by sophomore Courvoisier McCauley who is averaging 20.8 points per game (third in the SAC) while three more Railsplitters are recording double-figures in redshirt junior Devin Whitfield (17.8 ppg), redshirt sophomore Cameron Henry (12.2 ppg), and Brown (11.3 ppg). Henry serves as the top rebounder for his team averaging 7.1 boards per game while Brown provides a team-leading 5.2 assists per contest for LMU. The Railspitters are currently on a six-game win streak against the Cavaliers as the team enters into Wednesday's matchup. Up next, LMU will host Catawba College Saturday with tip slated for 4 p.m.

Head coach Blake Mellinger's squad suffered a 90-66 loss to Queens (NC) this past Saturday inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center as the Cavaliers now sit at 5-7 overall and 1-5 in South Atlantic Conference play. UVA Wise struggled from the field in the opening half against the Royals, shooting just 32.1 percent (9-for-28) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-for-11) from three-point range, and connected on 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe. Redshirt sophomore Briggs Parris led the way with 19 points, shooting 50 percent from behind the arc, and connected on a career-high seven free throws in the second half, going a perfect 7-for-7 at the line.  As a team, UVA Wise is posting 82.9 points per game while opponents are registering 80 points per contest. Ranked fourth in the league in field goal percentage, UVA Wise is shooting 46.3 percent from the floor and are averaging 37.3 rebounds per game. The team's 18.2 assists per game place them second in the conference. Sophomore Cameron Whiteside continues to lead the Cavs with his 17.8 points per game ranking him seventh in the SAC. Among indiviudal league leaders, UVA Wise ranks in the top-5 in six different categories including first-place ranks for Parris with his 3.8 three-point field goals made per game while senior Chance Sheffey remains the league leader in assists per game (5.8). Freshman Drew Greene's performance at the foul line places (93.8 percent) him second in the SAC as the team ranks third in the category while shooting 76.7 percent from the line. In the two teams last nine matchups, UVA Wise holds a 2-7 record against LMU after falling at home to the Railsplitters last season, 87-77. Coach Mellinger's team will stay on the road following Wednesday night's matchup as the Cavs travel to North Carolina to face Wingate University Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
