Cavs Battle Weather, Golden Eagles, Advance to Tournament Finals

WISE - - In a game that took over four hours to play due to a two-hour, four-minute rain delay, UVa-Wise outlasted Charleston 13-8 in the semifinals in the 2019 Mountain East Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament at Smith Stadium Friday afternoon.

The win gives the top-seeded Cavaliers (12-6) a berth in Sunday's 12 p.m. championship game where they will take on No. 3 seed Wheeling Jesuit University who knocked off No. 2 seed Shepherd University.

Winners of the regular season, UVa-Wise raced out to a 6-1 lead with 13:45 to play in the opening half. During the stretch, freshman Katie Allen scored three of her game-high four goals. It was the third hat trick of her freshman season.

Charleston (6-11) answered with a goal by Samantha Youngman to send the game to intermission with the guests trailing 6-2.

Moments before the start of the second half, lightening was in the area and forced a delay that lasted for over two hours.

Following the delay, the Golden Eagles scored four of the next six goals to make it an 8-6 contest.

The Cavs responded by scoring five of the game's final seven goals to advance to their second consecutive tournament final.

Junior Jesse French finished with a game-high six points as she joined Allen with a hat trick as she netted three goals in the win. As a team, UVa-Wise doubled up Charleston in shot attempts 36-to-18 while converting 27-of-30 clear attempts in the contest.

Peyton Harris, Brianna Rock and Youngman scored two goals each in what was the final game of the Golden Eagles' season.

Sunday's title tilt be the third meeting of the year between UVa-Wise and Wheeling Jesuit. The Cavs scored a 19-11 win in Wheeling on April 5 before upending the Cardinals 22-14 a week ago in Wise.

Both schools will be aiming for their second tournament crown; Jesuit won the tournament in 2017 while UVa-Wise won it a year ago.
