Softball Splits Doubleheader with Cardinals to Close Regular Season

GLENVILLE, W. Va. - - Cavalier softball split their doubleheader against Wheeling Jesuit University Sunday afternoon as UVa-Wise wrapped up regular season play on the road. The Cardinals topped the Cavs 8-3 in game one before UVa-Wise scored 14 runs over the final three innings of game two to defeat Wheeling Jesuit 15-6.

The Cardinals (12-38, 9-23 MEC) jumped ahead early in the top of the first as Wheeling Jesuit began the game with a leadoff double to center before a bunt placed runners in the corners. Another bunt plated one with a stolen base by the Cardinals setting up a two-RBI double off the bat of Brianna Grimes for a 3-0 Wheeling advantage.

Sophomore Kaylee Jones led the bottom of the frame for UVa-Wise (22-25, 16-16 MEC) with a single to center with a Cardinal error plating Bennett. Sophomore Casey Chambers followed with a sacrifice fly to advance runners but the Cardinals got their second out at home as Lucindy Lawson reached on a fielder's choice on the next at-bat. Sophomore Katie Russell's double to center drove home two before the Cardinals wrapped up the inning with a pop up as the Cavs cut into Wheeling's lead, 3-2.

Wheeling scored one more in the home half of the fourth on an RBI single to take a two-run, 4-2, lead into the fifth. The Cardinals extended their advantage to 6-2 in the fifth on a pair of RBI singles.

UVa-Wise would get one more run on the board in the top of the sixth on another RBI for Chambers as she scored Jones on a double to center field. The Cardinals then tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the frame as the Cavs recorded one hit and left one on in the top of the seventh for an 8-3 Wheeling victory.

Junior Raychel Lapallo fell to 9-11 on the season as she gave up 12 hits and struck out two across five innings.

Wheeling's Madison Macy (3-14) scattered six hits in a complete game effort.

The Cavs quickly took the lead in game two with back-to-back one-out doubles to left field by Russell and Jones with Jones' scoring Russell.

Neither team scored again until the top of the fourth as the Cavs scored five runs to open the lead to six runs over the Cardinals. Another leadoff base hit for Jones followed by a walk for sophomore Alexis Miles put two on with an error allowing junior Nikki Smith to reach first and load the bases for the Cavs. Another Cardinal error put Bennett on first and advanced Smith as Jones and Miles ran home for a 3-0 Cavalier lead. A passed ball put Chambers on first with no outs as Smith scored an unearned run. Chambers would steal second as Creasey hammered a two-out double to center to plate Chambers and Bennett as UVa-Wise claimed a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the frame.

Wheeling put their first run of the game on the board in the fourth on a one-out RBI double.

Each team pushed across multiple runs in the sixth frame with the Cavs scoring six while the Cardinals responded with five runs in the home half as UVa-Wise still led 12-6. The Cavs scored their runs on a two-run single by Spencer, a wild pitch, and a three-run blast to center off the bat of Creasey. Wheeling's Taylor DiPerna plated two for the Cardinals on a two-run homer as Wheeling scored three more on a pair of RBI doubles and an RBI single to end the frame.

UVa-Wise drove home three more in the top of the sixth on a three-run single by Spencer as Wheeling went three up, three down in the bottom of the inning to end the game with the run-rule as the Cavs topped Wheeling 15-6 in six innings of play.

Jones finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs while Creasey and Spencer each recorded two hits and five RBI in the win. Russell and Bennett also posted a hit in the game.

Spencer improved to 10-8 on the campaign as she scattered eight hits and fanned seven in six innings inside the circle.

The Cardinals' Kelsey Barron fell to 6-16 as she gave up seven hits and struck out three in 4 2/3 innings of work.
