Cavs Split Doubleheader at Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W. Va. - - The Cavaliers split a pair of games against Glenville State College Friday evening. The Pioneers took game one, 4-2, as the Cavs rallied back for a dominating 13-0 game two shutout. Sophomore Kailyn Spencer struck out 10 batters in a complete game effort as she earned her second shutout of the season.

A leadoff homer to left field off the bat of Glenville's Paranda Uber would be the Pioneers' first hit of the day as they took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

UVa-Wise (21-22, 15-13 MEC) looked to score in the top of the third as senior Ava Hockey's single was the Cavs only hit of the inning as they left two runners stranded while the Pioneers held onto the one-run advantage.

The Cavs gained their first lead of the day in the top of the fourth as senior Shannon Bennett led off the frame with a single to center field before sophomore Katie Russell recorded her first career home run on a shot to left field to score Bennett and gain a 2-1 advantage.

Glenville State (13-33, 6-22 MEC) responded as the Pioneers scored their final three runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Cavalier error and a two-run RBI to left field off the bat of Ally Brown.

UVa-Wise would be unable to score again as Glenville State held on for the 5-2 game one win.

Junior Taylor Creasey, sophomore Casey Chambers, Hockey, Bennett, and Russell each recorded a hit for the Cavs.

Junior Raychel Lapallo (9-10) suffered the loss as she scattered six hits and struck out four across four innings inside the circle.

Glenville's Brown (6-11) earned the win for the Pioneers as she gave up five hits and struck out five in a complete game effort.

UVa-Wise quickly put a run on the scoreboard in game two as junior Nikki Smith walked on the first at-bat of the game but would be out on the next play as Creasey reached on a fielder's choice. A wild pitch would send Creasey to second before sophomore Alexis Miles doubled to left field to score the left fielder and give the Cavs an early 1-0 lead.

The Cavs scored two more in the top of the third with a leadoff walk and single putting Hockey and Smith on base before a sacrifice bunt put UVa-Wise in position to score. Miles' second double of the day scored both Smith and Hockey as the Cavs extended their lead to 3-0.

Glenville's Brown recorded her third hit of the day in the bottom of the third inning on a single to center, but Spencer would strike out her second batter of the frame for the third out as the Cavs maintained the lead.

UVa-Wise pulled ahead by seven after a four-run fourth inning. A leadoff walk for Chambers followed by a double off the bat of Russell put the Cavs in position to score once more. With one out, back-to-back walks for Hockey and Smith scored Chambers with the bases still loaded. Creasey then singled to right to score Russell before another walk pushed across Hockey. An RBI single to center by sophomore Kaylee Jones scored Smith for the Cavs final run of the inning as they jumped ahead to a 7-0 advantage.

With the Pioneers unable to score through six innings, UVa-Wise pushed across six more runs on six hits in the final frame as the Cavs shutout the Pioneers, 13-0, in the second game of the day.

Smith, Miles, and Chambers each recorded two hits in the game while seven other Cavs each posted one hit as the Cavs registered 12 total hits in the game two victory.

Spencer improved to 8-7 with the win as she allowed just two hits and struck out 10 in a complete game effort.

Glenville's Tori Ward (3-8) suffered the loss giving up three hits across three innings in the circle.

UVa-Wise returns to action tomorrow for a doubleheader against West Virginia Wesleyan beginning at 2 p.m.
