WISE - - UVa-Wise softball split the day with Fairmont State University Tuesday afternoon earning a 1-0 game one victory before dropping game two to the Fighting Falcons, 5-1.
Fairmont State's (20-18, 14-10 MEC) Clarke recorded the first hit of the game in the top of the third on a single to shortstop, but the Fighting Falcons left two stranded with no runs scored yet in the game.
Sophomore Taylor Creasey recorded UVa-Wise's (17-18, 11-9 MEC) first hit of the day on a solo shot to left center in the bottom of the fourth for a 1-0 Cavalier advantage.
Fairmont looked to score in the top of the sixth with a pair of errors and stolen bases putting runners in the corner, but both would be left on base as the Cavs got the last two outs to head into the bottom of the inning.
Neither team recorded another hit in the game as the Cavs held onto a 1-0 victory in the first contest of the day.
Junior Raychel Lapallo improved to 8-7 with the win as she allowed just two hits and struck out one in a complete game effort.

The Fighting Falcons put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the first with a leadoff walk, sacrifice hit, and RBI single putting Fairmont ahead 1-0 early in the second game.
Creasey and sophomore Alexis Miles each recorded singles in the bottom half with a walk for sophomore Kaylee Jones loading the bases for the Cavs, but all three would be left stranded going into the top of the second.
Fairmont pushed across four more runs in the top of the fifth frame to take a 5-0 lead over the Cavs. A leadoff single, hit by pitch, and walk loaded the bases for the Fighting Falcons. Fairmont scored its second run of the game on a ground out before driving home two more on a two-RBI single and adding another one on an RBI single down the left field line.
UVa-Wise drove home its only run of the game with a walk and single putting two on base for the Cavs in the bottom of the sixth as pinch hitter Lucindy Lawson drove home Miles on an RBI single through the right side.
The Fighting Falcons went on to take game two 5-1 to split the doubleheader with the Cavs.
Sophomore Kailyn Spencer (6-6) suffered the loss as she scattered four hits across five innings with one strike out.
Fairmont's Darby Petersen (4-4) earned the victory in the circle allowing five hits and fanning five in a complete game effort.
Softball returns to action tomorrow to face Urbana University at Cavalier Field with the doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
