Softball Splits Doubleheader with Mountain Lions

WISE - - UVa-Wise split its doubleheader with Concord University Wednesday evening posting a 6-0 game one win before falling 10-0 to the Mountain Lions in game two. Junior Raychel Lapallo tossed a one-hitter in the game one shutout.

The Cavaliers scored a run in each inning in game one putting their first on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Kaylee Jones to score junior Nikki Smith after the shortstop singled and stole second to start the frame.

UVa-Wise scored back-to-back home runs in the home half of the second and third to extend the lead. Junior Julia Hoy blasted a two-out homer to left center before junior Taylor Creasey hit a solo shot to center field for a 3-0 Cavs lead into the top of the fourth.

Concord loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with a trio of walks, but would leave all three runners stranded as the Cavs maintained the lead.

Lapallo led the home half of the frame with a single to left center, advancing to second on the throw to put UVa-Wise in position to score once more as sophomore Katie Russell entered the game for the pitcher. Russell stole third on the next at bat as Hoy walked onto first to put runners in the corner. Junior Taylor Woodlief entered the lineup for Hoy as she stole second before Smith recorded her second hit of the day. Russell extended the Cavs lead on the next play scoring on a sacrifice fly by Creasey to give UVa-Wise a 4-0 advantage.

Sophomore Alexis Miles recorded the Cavs third homer of the day on a solo shot to left center to lead off the bottom of the fifth frame for UVa-Wise's third homer of the afternoon to put the Cavs on top 5-0.

The Mountain Lions registered their first hit of the day in the sixth inning on a single to left center off the bat of Abby Beatty, but would leave the runner stranded into the bottom of the inning.

Hoy, Smith, and Creasey each recorded a hit in the bottom of the sixth with Creasey scoring Hoy on an RBI single for a 6-0 UVa-Wise lead.

Concord would leave one stranded in the top of the seventh to end the game as the Cavs posted a 6-0 shutout win in the first contest of the day.

Smith registered three hits in the game while Hoy and Creasey each recorded two.

Lapallo (7-6) allowed just one hit in a complete game effort in the circle.

Concord's Darby Fitzpatrick fell to 4-4 on the season scattering 11 hits and striking out one across six innings.

The Mountain Lions took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first frame in game two on a RBI single by Kylie Kent to score Laura Thompson.

UVa-Wise recorded two hits in the bottom of the second and one hit in the third, but the score would remain unchanged until the top of the fourth when Concord scored one more on a groundout for a 2-0 advantage.

The Mountain Lions pushed eight more runs across in the top of the fifth while the Cavs went three up, three down in the home half to give Concord a 10-0 game two shutout win.

Sophomore Kailyn Spencer (5-5) suffered the loss as she scattered six of Concord's nine hits and struck out three in 4 1/3 innings in the circle.

Concord's Cartney Schoolcraft (9-5) earned the win allowing three hits with six strike outs in a complete game effort.

Softball returns to Cavalier Field Saturday with a doubleheader against Shepherd beginning at 1 p.m.
