Fast Starting Royals Upend Cavaliers

WISE - - No. 15 Queens University of Charlotte scored eight consecutive goals and 12 of the game's first 13 en route to a 23-10 non-conference women's lacrosse triumph over UVa-Wise at Smith Stadium Friday. The game pitted future South Atlantic Conference foes as UVa-Wise will be joining the league at the conclusion of this season. Friday's contest was also a Lax-4-Life game which focuses on suicide prevention among adolescents and young adults.

Queens (7-2) saw five players record a hat trick in the win. Attacker Rachel Perrett led the way as she netted three goals and dished out three assists to register a game-high six points. Kyleigh Masteran, Ally Blood, Sydney Bracken and Taylor Quade also scored three goals each as the Royals won their fourth straight game.

UVa-Wise (2-5) never recovered from the slow start as the Cavaliers found themselves trailing 12-1 with 6:33 to play in the half.

From there, Meghan Dennehy's squad made it's only run of the game as Katie Allen, McKayla Grasham, Caroline Earnshaw and Kristin Gobbi all scored over the final 3:19 of the first half to send the game to intermission at 12-5.

The momentum carried over into the second half as back-to-back goals by Grasham made it a 12-7 game with 26:44 remaining.

Undaunted, the Royals answered with a 7-1 scoring spurt to put the game out of reach.

Queens outshot UVa-Wise 41-27 while placing 37 shots on goal, the Royals also won the groundball battle 25-15.

Turnovers plagued the Cavaliers as the hosts committed 23 turnovers in the game. Overall, UVa-Wise converted just 12-of-21 clear opportunities. The Royals also enjoyed an advantage in free position shots as the visitors attempted 14 compared to four for the Cavs.

Grasham led all players with four goals and nine draw controls in defeat while Ellie Earnshaw added seven draw controls.

Next up, UVa-Wise will begin Mountain East Conference play with a trip to the University of Charleston Sunday. First draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
