WISE - - Maggie Guynn scored a career-high 21 points as Concord completed a season-series sweep of UVa-Wise with a 75-65 Mountain East Conference victory at the Prior Center Saturday. The win locked up the No. 3 seed for the Mountain Lions in next week's Mountain East Conference Tournament; ironically, Concord will play UVa-Wise, the six seed in the tournament on Thursday at 2:15 p.m. at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, W.Va.
Concord (22-6, 17-5) entered the game ranked eighth in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Poll, meaning the win kept hopes alive of an at large berth in the NCAA Tournament.
UVa-Wise (13-15, 11-1 MEC) jolted out to a 16-14 lead after a period of play behind a quick start from junior forward Cynita Webb. Webb tallied six points and four rebounds in the first 10 minutes of play but, an alarming sign for the Cavs was starting to show. The Mountain Lions made 3-of-6 three pointers in the first quarter en route to a 7-of-15 showing from distance for the game.
A 19-11 advantage in the second quarter proved to be the difference for the guests as Tamra Scott and Guynn scored six points each. On defense, Concord limited UVa-Wise to 5-of-21 shooting from the floor in the period to take a 33-27 lead to intermission.
The Mountain Lions seemingly put the game away when Riley Fitzwater made an inside layup with 4:26 to play to give her team a 64-53 lead. However, the Cavs battled back as a 5-0 run all by Kalee Johnson made it a 64-48 game with 3:27 to play.
It would be as close as Jamie Cluesman's team would get as Concord would make enough stops and make enough free throws to secure the victory.
Cynita Webb led UVa-Wise in the loss as she netted 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while teammate Ada Stanley scored a team-high 17 points off the bench.
Madison May chipped in 16 points and Andreanna Pool tallied 13 for Concord.
Prior to the game, UVa-Wise honored seniors Ashley Cullen, Dakotah Turner, "Quick Gomez, Janice Ladson and Alle Moore in Senior Day Ceremonies.
Thursday's tournament game can be heard live on FM 92.5 in Wise County or online at wlsdradio.com
