WISE - - The Cavalier men fell 83-72 in their regular season finale Saturday afternoon to Concord University. Four Cavalier men scored in double-figures led by freshman Cameron Whiteside who posted 20 points and seven rebounds in the loss. UVa-Wise also recognized guard Rahji Langford before the start of the regular season finale for Senior Day.
Junior Eric Okenchi followed with 16 points while freshman Briggs Parris added 13 points and junior Chance Sheffey added 10 points and a team-high four assists. Junior Tajh Eason led the team in rebounding with nine boards.
UVa-Wise (9-19, 6-16 MEC) went ahead by four early before Concord (19-9, 14-8 MEC) came from behind to gain a double-digit lead, 16-6, with just under 15 minutes in the half. Sheffey's three with 11:13 on the clock cut the Mountain Lions' lead to six points, 21-15.
Concord gained its largest lead of the half with a 31-15 advantage over UVa-Wise on a three-pointer with 4:14 left in the opening half. The Cavs struggled to score the remainder of the first half as Concord maintained a double-digit lead, going into the half up 44-29 over UVa-Wise.
Whiteside and Parris each posted seven points to start with the Cavs shooting just 34.4 percent (11-for-32) from the field, 20 percent (2-for-10) from behind the arc, and 50 percent (5-for-10) from the foul line.
The Mountain Lions were 15-for-30 (50 percent) from the field to start, 4-for-12 (33.3 percent) from three, and 10-for-12 (83.3 percent) from the free throw line. Concord outrebounded the Cavs 23-17 in the opening half while UVa-Wise posted 18 points in the paint to 16 for the Mountain Lions.
Parris knocked down two at the charity stripe to start the second half scoring as Concord held a 44-31 lead.
Concord took its biggest lead of the game, 60-37, with 14:41 to go. A 23-6 run by UVa-Wise had the Cavs within six points, 66-60 with just over six minutes left in the game.
After the Mountain Lions regained a double-digit lead, back-to-back jumpers by Okenchi put UVa-Wise down by single-digits once again as Concord still led the Cavs 71-64 with 4:11 on the clock.
Another run by UVa-Wise with under two minutes to play would put the Cavs within three points, 75-72, at the 1:36 mark. Concord would close out the game with a 7-0 run to earn an 83-72 win over the Cavs.
The Cavs shot 41.9 percent (13-for-31) from the field in the second half as Concord shot 34.4 percent (11-for-32) from the floor. UVa-Wise posted 22 points inside the paint to 14 points for the Mountain Lions in the second half.
UVa-Wise finished the night shooting 38.1 percent (24-for-63) from the field, 15.8 percent (3-for-19) from downtown, and 77.8 percent (21-for-27) from the charity stripe. Concord was 26-for-62 (41.9 percent) from the floor and were 25-for-29 (86.2 percent) from the foul line in the game.
Blake Mellinger's team has now secured the 10th seed in the Mountain East Conference tournament with the Cavs scheduled to face No. 7 seed Shepherd University Wednesday night. Tip is slated for 6 p.m. at the WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia.
