Cavs Tangle with Cardinals Saturday Afternoon

Storylines – vs Wheeling jesuit

Losers of 15 consecutive games and winless on the road, Wheeling Jesuit will attempt to remain in the hunt for a Mountain East Conference Tournament berth against UVa-Wise. The Cardinals last win came on Nov. 26 against Pitt-Johnstown while the team has not won a league contest since Nov. 17 against West Virginia Wesleyan. Senior forward Chenelle Moore has a bright spot for first-year coach Mike Llanas, the six-foot native of Westerville, Ohio has scored in double figures 18 times this season. Earlier this season, she netted 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting while adding 13 rebounds against UVa-Wise. Overall, Moore leads the MEC and ranks third nationally in rebounding at 12.9 per game while leading all of NCAA Division II in offensive rebounding by averaging 5.5 a contest. Defense has been an issue for the Cardinals, opponents are shooting 45.0 percent from the floor and 36.5 percent from the 3-point line. The 3-point field goal percentage defense ranks last in the conference. To make the league tournament, Llanas' club will have to overcome a two-game deficit with seven games to play.

About uva-wise

UVa-Wise will look to halt a two-game skid against Wheeling Jesuit Saturday. The first time the two teams met, senior quard "Quick" Gomez recorded the first triple-double in the NCAA era of the College as she scored 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 10 assists in the Cavaliers' 81-61 triumph. Gomez's performance highlighted a day that saw four UVa-Wise players reach double figure scoring. Redshirt sophomore Kalee Johnson netted 16 points while freshman Mackenzie King added 13 and sophomore Ada Stanley chipped in 10. Most recently, UVa-Wise dropped a 69-64 decision to West Liberty despite 20 points from Ada Stanley and a 13-point, 15-rebound outing showing from junior Cynita Webb. With Thursday's loss, the Cavs remain one game behind Shepherd University for the No. 6 seed in the upcoming league tournament. The top six teams in the event will receive a bye while seeds 7 - 10 must play opening round contests. Following the game, UVa-Wise will play four consecutive league road games.
