'Toppers Rally to Knock Off Cavalier Women

WISE - - Visiting West Liberty University finished the game on a 13-2 scoring spurt to claim a 69-64 Mountain East Conference women's basketball victory over UVa-Wise at the Prior Center Thursday evening.

Marissa Brown paced the West Liberty (14-7, 11-4 MEC) attack as the senior forward netted a game-high 26 points while adding 14 rebounds and a pair of blocks in 37 minutes of play.

The Youngstown State transfer's biggest impact came in the first half as she scored 20 points and corralled seven rebounds in the first half.

UVa-Wise (9-12, 7-8 MEC) trailed 37-33 at intermission before the Cavaliers battled back to take a lead going to the fourth quarter.

Ashley Cullen gave UVa-Wise a six point lead at 62-56 with 5:29 to play to cap a 5-0 run.

From there, the visitors took control of the game as Brandi Beader made a pair of foul shots before a layup and 3-pointer from Borgan Brunner gave the Hilltoppers the lead for good at 63-62.

West Liberty salted the game away at the foul line as Taylor Johnson and Brown made two free throws each to claim the 69-64 triumph.

Sophomore Ada Stanley came off the bench to lead UVa-Wise with 20 points while junior Cynita Webb posted a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

The 'Toppers enjoyed a strong shooting performance from the free throw line by going 15-of-20 from the charity stripe.

Johnie Olkosky aided West Liberty to a 53-47 advantage on the glass as she claimed 14 rebounds.

Next up, UVa-Wise will entertain Wheeling Jesuit Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip.
