ETTRICK, Va. - - UVa-Wise softball earned a tournament sweep this weekend following the team's two wins over Virginia State University Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers defeated the Trojans 9-5 in game one before posting a 7-3 victory in game two.
The Cavs (3-0) would get on the board first in the top of the second inning with a 2-0 lead over the Trojans. Madison David would lead off with a single to shortstop with Katie Russell reaching first on a hit by pitch on the next at-bat. With two outs, Russell and David would both advance on a ground out as the Cavs looked to score. Kaylee Jones loaded the bases for UVa-Wise on a walk before Alexis Miles' double scored Russell and David. The Trojans would get their final out on a fly out to right field, leaving two runners on base going into the bottom of the inning.
Virginia State (1-2) would record two hits in the home half of the second but would end the inning leaving a runner stranded on third.
A leadoff homer in the top of the third off the bat of Julia Hoy would extend the Cavs lead to 3-0. Nikki Smith would walk on base before Russell singled to center field. A wild pitch by the Trojans would put UVa-Wise in position to score once again as Smith and Russell both advanced a base. Collins' fly out to centerfield would drive home Smith followed by a single to right field by Shannon Bennet to score Russell as the Cavs held a 5-0 advantage over Virginia State.
Miles would be up first at the plate in the top of the fourth inning as she reached second base on a single followed by a wild pitch. Creasey's walk on to first base would place runners on first and second with no outs. Virginia State would get its first out of the inning on a strikeout but an RBI double to center field off the bat of Smith would send home Miles with Creasey on third. The Cavs would score again on David's fly out to left field to score Creasey. Smith would score the last run of the inning on a wild pitch with UVa-Wise leading 8-0.
Virginia State would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth scoring their first run on a double to right field. The Trojans would score two more unearned runs as the Cavs held on to an 8-3 advantage.
The Trojans would get two more runs across home plate in the home half of the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-5 heading into the last inning.
UVa-Wise would put more run on the board in the top of the seventh with a two-out homer off the bat of Kailyn Spencer giving the Cavs a 9-5 lead. VSU would end the game going three up, three down as the Cavs took game one.
Miles finished game one going 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Smith went 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Sydney Collins (1-0) earned the win for the Cavs allowing seven hits with three strikeouts and one error in 4 1/3 innings inside the circle.
Kennedy Presson suffered the loss for the Trojans as she scattered six hits with three strikeouts and five errors across three innings.
Jones would get things moving quickly to start game two as she put UVa-Wise (4-0) in position to score with a leadoff single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch by the Trojans would place Jones on third. Creasey would hit a two-out single to right field to score Jones for a quick 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the first.
Virginia State (1-3) responded in the home half of the inning with a single and an error putting Trojan runners on first and second before a walk would load the bases for Virginia State. An RBI single to center field would knot the game at 1-1 as the Trojans ended the inning leaving two runners stranded.
A triple to right field followed by a wild pitch would score Jones as the Cavs pushed a run across quickly to start the third inning. On the next at-bat Miles doubled to left field with before a groundout by Smith placed Miles on third base. The second wild pitch of the inning by the Trojans would drive home Miles for a 3-1 UVa-Wise lead into the bottom of the third.
A two-out single to shortstop in the bottom of the inning would score a run for the Trojans as they left one runner on base heading into the fourth.
Each team would put one more run on the board in the fourth inning. Madison David would score for UVa-Wise off of a single to center field by Jones. Virginia State would send a run across home plate on a single to center field with the Cavs still leading 4-3.
The Cavs scored their first run of the sixth inning on a double to center field off the bat of Shannon Bennett to score Melissa Bartley. With Bennett on third, Miles would knock a double to center field to send home Bennett for a 6-3 advantage.
VSU would not record a hit in the bottom of the sixth as UVa-Wise looked to secure the win in the top of the seventh.
Creasey wasted no time in the top of the final inning with a leadoff triple before a fly out to left field allowed Creasey to score the Cavs final run.
The Trojans would record their second consecutive inning without a hit as UVa-Wise held on to a 7-3 victory.
Jones had a strong performance going 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Miles was 2-for-4 with one run and an RBI while Creasey and Bennett were both 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and an RBI.
Ashleigh Nalls (1-0) picked up the win for the Cavs with five hits and two strikeouts in three innings of work.
Brooklyn Bilyard suffered the loss scattering six hits with only one strike in three innings inside the circle.
Cavalier softball will be back on the road in two weeks as the team competes in the Bear Bash Tournament in Hickory, N.C. on Saturday Feb. 16 and Sunday Feb. 17.
