Cavalier Men Earn First Road Win of the Season Against Urbana

URBANA, Ohio - - UVa-Wise posted its first road win of the season Thursday night against Urbana University, 90-73. Five players scored in double-figures for the Cavaliers with the team posting a season-high 27 assists in the game.

Redshirt freshman Briggs Parris and junior Eric Okenchi led the way with 18 points apiece with Okenchi adding a team-best seven boards. Freshman Cameron Whiteside finished with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and five rebounds. Fellow freshman Kaeleb Carter had 11 points with four rebounds and four assists while sophomore Jordan Pointer netted 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting. Junior Michal Seals registered a team-high nine assists as the guard posted his 500th career assist in the win.

UVa-Wise (8-17, 5-14 MEC) pushed to a nine-point lead early, scoring nine consecutive points as the Cavs led the Blue Knights (5-18, 3-16 MEC) 11-2 at the 17:34 mark. Urbana would go on a run to cut the deficit to two points with a little over 13 minutes to play in the half with the Blue Knights down 13-11.

A three-pointer by Parris extended UVa-Wise's lead to double-digits for the first time in the game with the Cavs holding a 22-12 advantage midway through the half.

UVa-Wise maintained the lead for the rest of the first half as the Cavs headed into the locker room up 42-21 over the Blue Knights. Urbana chipped away at the Cavs lead to cut it down to single-digits, but UVa-Wise would extend its advantage to thirteen points, 34-21, into the final media timeout of the half.

The Cavs posted 22 points inside the paint and 14 points off of turnovers and were assisted with 10 points off the bench to open the game.

Parris had 18 points to open the half followed by Carter who netted eight points to start.

UVa-Wise held at least a 20-point scoring margin over Urbana for much of the second half, taking their largest lead of the game at 26 points on a bucket by Okenchi for a 52-26 advantage with 16:27 left in the half.

A three ball by Urbana cut the Blue Knights deficit back to 18, 72-54, with a little over six minutes to play. The Cavs sustained their lead as the team secured a 17-point 90-73 victory over Urbana on the road.

UVa-Wise shot 56.7 percent (17-for-30) from the field in the second half, 42.9 percent (3-of-7) from behind the arc, and went 11-for-19 (57.9 percent) from the line. Okenchi and Whiteside put up 14 points apiece in the second half while Whiteside added four rebounds.

Urbana went 20-for-35 (57.1 percent) from the floor, 9-for-17 (52.9 percent) from three-point range, and connected on 3-of-7 (42.9 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Cavs netted 26 points inside the paint and 14 points to Urbana's two on fast breaks. The team added 12 assists and six steals in the closing half with Whiteside and Okenchi each posting 14 points.

UVa-Wise finished the night shooting 56.1 percent (32-for-57) from the floor, 6-of-17 (35.3 percent) from three-point range, and 60.6 percent (20-for-33) from the foul line. The Cavs posted 13 steals and 37 rebounds in the game.

The Blue Knights shot 45.2 percent (28-for-62) from the field, 39.3 percent (11-for-28) from downtown, and connecting on 6-of-13 (46.2 percent) from the free throw line. Urbana recorded 33 total rebounds with 14 assists and turned the ball over 20 times in the loss.

Blake Mellinger's team will return to action on Saturday for their final road game of the season against Notre Dame College. Tip is slated for 4 p.m.
