No. 4 Lindenwood Downs UVa-Wise in Season Opener

WISE - - No. 4 Lindenwood University scored 21 unanswered goals as the Lions claimed a 21-3 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over UVa-Wise at Smith Stadium Sunday.

UVa-Wise (0-1) jumped out an early 2-1 lead after the start of the game was delayed 48 minutes due to lightening.

Senior McKayla Grasham and junior Jesse French each netted a goal for the Cavaliers to give Meghan Dennehy's team a goal advantage with 24:54 to play in the opening half.

Things quickly turned south for UVa-Wise in its season opener as Lindenwood (2-0) scored 10 consecutive goals to close out the first half.

The nationally ranked Lions continued the scoring flurry in the second half as the only goal scored by the Cavs came when Grasham found the back of the net as the game's final horn sounded.

Lindenwood was led by Gracie Pine who netted five goals while Carly Fedorowski dished out five assists en route to a game-high eight points. Sami Smit also had a hat trick with four goals.

Overall, the Lions finished with 46 shots while limiting the Cavs to just six shots in the game. Lindenwood won 21-of-25 contested draw controls and converted 16-of-18 clears.

The contest featured a second delay mid-way through the first half as play was stopped for 35 minutes.

UVa-Wise will be back in action on Feb. 20 when the team travels to Tusculum University.
