Cavalier Women Fall at King in 2019 Finale

BRISTOL, Tenn. - - King University scored 29 points in the third quarter to break open what was a two possession game at the break to score an 88-79 non-conference women's basketball victory over UVA Wise Saturday.

King (5-6) led by just three at 46-43 with under five minutes to play in the third quarter when things quickly turned south for UVA Wise (6-5).

Cavalier sophomore Mackenzie King was whistled for a foul trying to defend a shot attempt by Julie Ford. Ford's shot went in and as King was being subbed out of the game prior to the free throw she was assessed a technical foul after leaving the floor.

At that point, UVA Wise Head Coach Jamie Cluesman began questioning the call and after a brief exchange, she was assessed a technical foul. The Tornado would connect on five straight foul shots during the sequence and receive the ball.

On the inbounds play, UVA Wise freshman Caitlyn Ross was called for a hand checking foul and with her team already over the limit, it sent King back to the line where the hosts made two more foul shots to turn what was a 46-43 game to a 55-43 game without the Cavs ever having possession.

The Cavs would spend the rest of the contest playing from behind. UVA Wise would get within three points on two occasions in the fourth quarter but would be unable to get closer as King salted away the game by going 21-for-24 at the stripe.

Prior to the back-to-back technical foul sequence, the game saw four lead changes and two ties. The Cavs had just completed a 10-to-2 run when the sequence occurred to all but erase a double digit advantage.

Senior Cynita Webb led UVA Wise with 19 points and 19 rebounds while freshman Nia Vanzant netted 14 points with Ross and Hanna Oliver chipping in 12 each in defeat.

King was led by Ali Golden who went a perfect 12-for-12 at the charity stripe en route to a game-high 25 points. The Tornado made 11 shots from distance in the win, including five from Kiki Samsel who tallied 15 points.

Next up, UVA Wise will return to South Atlantic Conference play against Queens University of Charlotte on Jan. 4.
