WISE – The Cavalier men were outlasted by the Wolves of Newberry Saturday afternoon, 73-67, inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center. Redshirt sophomore Briggs Parris posted a game-high 20 points in the loss.
The Cavs (4-5, 1-3 SAC) struggled at the charity stripe, connecting on just 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) while Newberry (7-3, 3-2 SAC) won the rebounding battle, 40-30, in the Wolves' win.
UVA Wise maintained the advantage early in the first half before Newberry managed to tie the game at 14-14 with 11:40 on the clock. Newberry took the lead midway through the opening half but a three by redshirt junior Yesid Mosquera-Perea put the Cavs within one, 18-17. The Wolves went ahead by four before a three-point play by sophomore Cameron Whiteside cut Newberry's lead to one point again, 21-20 with under seven minutes to go.
The Wolves held onto the advantage, going up by as much as 13 points with 3:06 on the clock, 33-20, as UVA Wise trailed Newberry into the half, 33-25.
UVA Wise shot 36 percent (9-for-25) from the field, 41.7 percent (5-for-12) from three point range, and knocked down 2-of-3 (66.7 percent) at the line in the first frame. Parris led all scorers with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting while going 3-for-5 from downtown.
Newberry gained its first double-digit lead early in the second half before another three by Parris cut the Cavs deficit to seven points, 37-30. The Wolves stayed on top but an 8-2 run for UVA Wise put the Cavs within three points, 50-47, with 11:30 on the clock on a three ball by Whiteside.
Seven straight points for UVA Wise put Newberry ahead by just one point, 57-56, as Parris drained a shot from behind the arc with 7:33 to play. Back-to-back three pointers late in the game for Mosquera-Perea put UVA Wise down by four, 71-67, with 1:34 left to play, but the Wolves held on for a 73-67 victory.
Whiteside found his rhythm in the second half as he netted 14 while Mosquera-Perea added 10 points and Parris posted nine. UVA Wise dished out 11 assists in the closing half led by senior Chance Sheffey and Whiteside who had three apiece. Senior Eric Okenchi led the team in the second frame with four boards.
UVA Wise shot 53.6 percent (15-for-28) from the floor, 46.7 percent (7-for-15) from three, and 50 percent (5-for-10) from the foul line in the closing frame.
Parris was the leading scorer on the afternoon while Whiteside followed with 19 points. Parris and Whiteside each went 7-for-13 from the floor while Parris knocked down 6-of-12 from downtown. Mosquera-Perea also finished in double-figures for the Cavs with a season-high 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, 3-for-6 from behind the arc. Okenchi and Carter each collected a team-high six rebounds while senior Sheffey registered a game-high six assists in the loss. The Cavs shot 45.3 percent (24-for-53) from the field and 44.4 percent (12-for-27) from behind the arc on the night.
Head coach Blake Mellinger's team will return to action on the road Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip against Tusculum University before returing home for a 12 p.m. matchup against Ohio University - Chillicothe Thursday at noon.
