WISE – Cavalier men earned their first South Atlantic Conference win in a 90-75 victory over Anderson University inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center. Four Cavaliers scored in double figures led by sophomore Cameron Whiteside who netted a game-high 23 points in the victory.
The Trojans (3-3, 0-2 SAC) took the advantage early but an 11-0 run for UVA Wise (4-3, 1-1 SAC) put the Cavs up by six points, 15-9, with 13:18 on the clock. Anderson managed to cut the Cavs lead to three points with just under 12 minutes to play but another Cavalier run capped off by a three pointer by redshirt junior Yesid Mosquera-Perea put UVA Wise ahead by nine points, 28-19.
Another three by sophomore Kaeleb Carter with a little over six minutes left on the clock would give the Cavs their first double-digit lead of the night, 31-21. Back-to-back shots from downtown for the Trojans put Anderson down by four points, 35-31, but a three ball and a pair of free throws for Anderson tied the game at 38-38 heading into halftime.
UVA Wise finished the opening half with 12 points in the paint compared to eight points for the Trojans. Anderson was assisted by 13 second chance points while UVA Wise tallied eight points off of turnovers in the first half. The Cavs shot 44.8 percent (13-for29) from the floor and went 7-for-9 (77.8 percent) from the charity stripe.
Whiteside led the Cavs with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and five rebounds to start. Fellow sophomore Kaeleb Carter added eight points while redshirt sophomore Briggs Parris notched seven points with two assists.
Carter scored the first six points of the second half to give the Cavs a 44-38 lead with a little over 18 minutes left to play. A 14-0 run for UVA Wise extended the Cavs advantage to 57-40 with 12:21 on the clock. The lead dwindled to single digits as Anderson knocked down a three with 7:37 to go to put the Trojans down by four, 60-56.
The Cavs regained their double-digit advantage on a shot from downtown by Parris and maintained the lead as UVA Wise gained their first league win of the season, 90-75, over Anderson.
UVA Wise outscored the Trojans in the paint, 18-10, while the Cavs were aided by 14 points off turnovers. The Cavs shot 53.8 percent (14-for-26) from the field, 50 percent (4-for-8) from behind the arc, and went 20-for-23 (87 percent) from the foul line.
Whiteside added 14 second half points to tie his season-high 23 points. Parris tallied 13 points in the second half on 4-of-5 shooting from the field while Carter added 11 second half points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor. Senior Chance Sheffey, Whiteside, and Parris were all perfect from the line in the closing half, combining to shoot 13-for-13 from the charity stripe.
Parris finished with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting while Carter netted 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field. Sheffey added 12 points in the win and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Whiteside and senior Eric Okenchi each notched a team-high seven rebounds while Okenchi added seven points in the victory.
The Cavs shot 49.1 percent (27-for-55) from the floor on the night, going 9-for-23 (39.1 percent) from three, and 27-for-32 (84.4 percent) from the charity stripe.
Head coach Blake Mellinger's team will return to action next Saturday with their first SAC road matchup against Catawba College with tip slated for 9 p.m.
