UVa-Wise Drops Exhibition Tilt at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UVa-Wise suffered a 102-64 loss in its exhibition game at Samford University Wednesday night.

The Cavaliers (1-2) trailed early on but managed to get within two points, 16-14, on a jumper by senior Chance Sheffey with 13:05 on the clock in the first half. Samford (2-2) pulled ahead to a double-digit lead, 30-18, on a three-point shot with 7:37 to go. The Bulldogs connected on the final shot of the half from the foul line as Samford went into the locker room with a 44-27 lead over the Cavs.

UVa-Wise shot 34.4 percent (11-for-32) from the floor, 25 percent (3-for-12) from three, and 40 percent (2-for-5) from the charity stripe in the first half. The team totaled 17 rebounds, six assists, and five steals to start.

Samford gained a 21 point advantage less than a minute into the second half, taking a 48-27 lead over the Cavs. The Bulldogs took their largest lead of the night with 1:45 to go, up by 42 points, as Samford went on to secure a 102-64 victory over the Cavs.

Sheffey had a team-high eight points in the second half while sophomore Cameron Whiteside and senior Eric Okenchi each netted five points. The Cavs were 12-for-31 (38.7 percent) from the floor in the closing half, connecting on 4-of-16 (25 percent) from downtown, and 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) from the free throw line.

Sheffey and Whiteside led the Cavaliers with 12 points each on the night. Sheffey added a team-high six rebounds and two assists while Whiteside finished with four rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Briggs Parris netted eight points while Okenchi posted seven points. Sophomore Kaeleb Carter registered a team-high six rebounds and dished out five assists in the loss.

Head coach Blake Mellinger's team will return to Wise for a Monday night contest against Berea College (Ky.). Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
