Cavalier Men Fall Short Against Wheeling

WHEELING, W. Va. - - UVa-Wise failed to get its first road win of the season Saturday afternoon with a 78-68 loss to Wheeling Jesuit.

Junior guard Michal Seals and redshirt freshman Briggs Parris each netted 14 points apiece while Sealls added six rebounds. Freshman forward Kaeleb Carter also scored in double-figures for the Cavaliers finishing with 10 points and four rebounds.

UVa-Wise (5-10, 3-7 MEC) and Wheeling Jesuit (2-14, 1-9 MEC) were in a battle from the start as the Cavs held a slim lead early, 9-8, five minutes into the game. The two teams would trade baskets before a three-ball by the Cardinals' pushed Wheeling's margin to five, 18-13, with 10:41 to go in the half.

A shot from downtown by Parris would tie the game with just under eight minutes to go before another three by Seals would give the Cavs a 23-20 lead with 7:13 on the clock.

UVa-Wise and Wheeling would tie the game two more times before the Cardinals pushed ahead to a 31-27 advantage with 1:45 left in the opening half. Seals and junior guard Chance Sheffey would cut the deficit at the foul line as the Cardinals held a 31-30 lead at the 1:26 mark.

A bucket by junior forward Tajh Eason with just under 30 seconds on the clock would put UVa-Wise ahead 32-31 heading into halftime.

UVa-Wise finished the half shooting 46.2 percent (12-for-26) from the floor and just 2-for-7 (28.6 percent from beyond the arc. The team finished the half knocking down 6-of-8 (75 percent) from the foul line.

The Cavs were led in scoring by Seals who posted 10 points with four rebounds on 3-for-4 shooting from the field. Parris had seven points followed by sophomore forward Jordan Pointer who netted six in the opening half while Sheffey led the team in rebounding with six boards.

Back-to-back buckets by Carter and Sheffey put the Cavs up 36-31 less than two minutes into the second half. UVa-Wise would hold onto to the lead until the 13:15 mark when a dunk by Wheeling's Emmanuel Ansong pushed the Cardinals to a 46-44 advantage.

The two teams would knot the game two more times before a 5-0 Wheeling run gave the Cardinals a 55-49 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the game. Wheeling would push the margin to 10 points at the 6:26 mark, 64-54.

The Cardinals would go up by as much as 12 points over the next few minutes, by a foul by the Cardinals would put senior guard Rahji Langford at the line as he knocked down two to put the Cavs down by eight with 3:11 on the clock, 68-60.

Wheeling would regain a double-digit advantage taking their largest lead of the night at the 1:48 mark to go up by 14 points, 74-60. Carter would respond connecting on consecutive three-pointers to cut the Cardinals lead to six with 48 seconds to play. Unable to get a stop, UVa-Wise would put Wheeling at the foul line to close out the game as the Cardinals notched a 78-68 victory.

UVa-Wise struggled from the field in the second half, shooting just 38.2 percent (13-for34) from the field, 23.1 percent (3-for-13) from downtown, and connecting on just 7-of-14 (50 percent) from the free throw line.

The Cavs finished the night going 25-for-60 (41.7 percent) from the floor, 5-of-20 (25 percent) from three, and 13-for-22 (59.1 percent) from the foul line.

Blake Mellinger's team returns to action on Wednesday for a road game against West Virginia State. Tip is slated for 7:30 p.m.
