WISE - - The final shot of Hannah Marshall's collegiate career will forever be remembered. The senior from Atlanta scored unassisted with 1:53 to play in triple overtime to give UVa-Wise its first Mountain East Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament crown with a 12-11 win over Shepherd University at Smith Stadium Sunday. The win capped a perfect conference season for the Cavaliers who finished a perfect 5-0 in the regular season before winning a pair of games in the tournament.
UVa-Wise (14-4) won its first draw control in three tries to begin an overtime session to start the third extra period. After running a minute off the clock, the Cavs began to look for a shot. Senior Rachel Cole worked into scoring position before passing to Marshall who then worked her way inside before scoring the game-winning goal.
Her goal set off the biggest celebration in the four-year history of the lacrosse program at the College as fans rushed the field to celebrate with the victorious Cavs.
It was the 40th win for the program in its first 65 games while the tournament title is the first for the program.
Shepherd (8-7) continued its season of near misses, it was third one goal loss for the Rams who also dropped a one-goal decision to the Cavs in the regular season finale.
Shepherd led by two goals at 11-9 with 7:12 to play only to see the championship slip through its fingertips.
Marshall scored off a Kristin Gobbi pass with 5:49 to play before Gobbi scored a woman-down goal with less than two minutes to play to force overtime, it was the 100th goal of her career..
In the first extra period, the Rams won the draw and the first opportunity to win the game as MEC Offensive Player of the Year Lillian Funke fired on goal only to see senior Melanie Reilly, the MEC Defensive Player of the Year collect the save.
Funke's teammate Sidney Kelly would scoop up the groundball and give Shepherd another shot at victory. Again, the visitors would be stoned as Reilly stopped a shot by Kelly, giving possession to UVa-Wise.
The Rams defense would be up to the task, preventing the Cavs from getting a shot off as the hosts were assessed a shot clock violation allowing the first overtime to expire.
In the second extra session, Shepherd would once again win the draw only to see Marshall force a turnover. UVa-Wise would get a shot but, McKayla Grasham's shot would be saved by Casey Hickman.
Once again, the Rams would squander a scoring chance as a turnover would give possession back to the Cavs.
A shot by Cole would sail high for the final shot attempt of the second overtime, forcing the third overtime period.
While Marshall's game-winning goal will forever be remembered, the defensive play of UVa-Wise, specifically goalie Reilly, played as important role in the win.
Reilly finished the game with 13 saves en route to all-tournament team honors. She was joined on the team by teammates Cole, Grasham and Tournament Most Valuable Player Marshall.
The first half of the game was a sloppy affair with both teams committing double digit turnovers. UVa-Wise led 5-3 with 7:59 to play in the half on a goal by freshman Riley Fenster only to see back-to-back goals by Kelly and Funke tie the game with 5:48 to play before intermission.
Neither school would have a two goal lead again until Shepherd's two goal advantage with 7:12 to play.
Statistically, the game was nearly dead even. UVa-Wise finished with 25 shots on goal to the 24 attempted by Shepherd while each school tallied 13 saves while turning it over 28 times with the Cavs finishing with one more draw control with 14.
Individually, Funke led the way with five points (four goals), five draw controls, four caused turnovers and three groundballs while Lyric Conaway tallied six groundballs and Hickman registered 13 saves.
Gobbi and Cole scored twice each to aid Marshall's four-goal effort while Sydney Steinberg, Jessica Apgar, Grasham and Fenster all netted a goal in the win.
Marshall stuffed the stat sheet as she posted five caused turnovers, four draw controls and two groundballs.
The 14 wins in a season are the most for UVa-Wise who finishes the season with an eight-game winning streak.
