Softball Sweeps Glenville State, Co-Head Coach Nick Bitter Earns 100th Win

WISE - - UVa-Wise softball wrapped up its regular season Sunday afternoon with two dominating shutouts against Glenville State. The Cavaliers earned an 8-0 shutout in game one and scored an incredible 17 runs in the second game as each game ended in five innings. The game one victory marked the 100th win for Co-Head Coach Nick Bitter.

UVa-Wise (27-21, 16-16 MEC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Zoe Millard would leadoff with a walk and advance to second on the next play before Alexis Miles knocked an RBI triple to right center field to plate Millard.

Glenville State (20-32, 8-24 MEC) looked to get on the board in the top of the second when Cassidy Taylor walked onto first base but a double play followed by a strike out would keep the Cavs ahead entering into the home half of the second.

Taylor Creasey would lead off the Cavs with a walk in the second inning as she advanced to third on a sacrifice ground out by Nikki Smith followed by a wild pitch. Monica Brandts would follow with a walk as Kelsy Padgett entered the lineup as a pinch runner for Brandts. Padgett would steal second base before Ava Hockey reached on a fielding error, advancing Padgett to third and scoring Creasey for a 2-0 lead going into the third frame.

A five-run inning in the fourth frame would seal the deal for UVa-Wise. With one out, Millard singled to short stop while Ava Hockey advanced to third on a throwing error. Millard then stole second base before Bridget Henzel hit a RBI single to left field, scoring Hockey. Miles would reach on a fielder's choice but Millard would be out on the play. A Kaylee Jones single up the middle would push across Henzel while Jones advance to second and Miles advanced to third. Samantha Ely would double down the left field on the next play to drive home Miles and Jones. Creasey then singled and advanced to second base on an error while Ely scored to give the Cavs an 8-0 victory in a five inning game one.

Miles was 2-for-3 with a two runs and an RBI while Ely was 2-for-3 from the plate with a run and two RBI. Millard, Bridget, Jones, and Creasey each had one hit and one run on the day.

Senior pitcher Taylor Brandts improved to 15-10 on the season as she allowed only one hit and fanned four.

Glenville's Ally Brown (13-13) surrendered the loss for the Pioneers as she gave up six hits and struck out one in three and 2/3 innings.

UVa-Wise had an incredible game two as the Cavs pushed across 17 runs on 16 hits in five innings.

The Cavs would get things going with a two RBI homer off the bat of Miles putting UVa-Wise up 2-0 early in the bottom of the first. A Creasey double to left field would score Jones before Lucindy Lawson homered to drive home Creasey and Ely. UVa-Wise would get its third homerun of the inning with a solo blast from Monica Brandts to put the Cavs up 7-0 early.

UVa-Wise would get another run in the home half of the second when Monica Brandts hit an RBI double to right field to score Lawson.

An eight-run third inning would extend the Cavs lead to 16-0 going into the fourth.

UVa-Wise tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fourth when Madison David hit an RBI single up the middle to score Melissa Bartley for the 17-0 shutout in game two.

Twelve different Cavaliers recorded at least one hit in game two. Miles was perfect at the plate going 2-for-2 with two runs and led the team with four RBI. Millard also went 2-for-2 with two runs while Lawson was 1-for-1 with three runs and three RBI.

Kailyn Spencer (5-4) picked up the win for the Cavs as she twirled a one-hitter and fanned five in five innings inside the circle.

Glenville's Tori Ward fell to 7-12 with the loss as she allowed four hits.

UVa-Wise softball will now head into postseason play with the Mountain East Conference Softball Tournament set to begin on Friday, May 4.
