WISE - - UVa-Wise softball had two dominating wins Wednesday afternoon against Concord University. The Cavaliers earned a doubleheader sweep of the Mountain Lions with an 8-2 game one win and an 11-3 mercy rule victory in game two.
Concord (12-16, 9-9 MEC) jumped out to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first behind a solo homer by Jenna Witt.
UVa-Wise (22-12, 11-7) would push across a run to knot the game in the home half of the second. Alexis Miles hit a leadoff single followed by a double to center field by Taylor Creasey as Miles advanced to third. Miles then scored on an RBI single to left center field off the bat of Nikki Smith.
The Mountain Lions would score Alycea Watson on a Darby Fitzpatrick fly out to center field to take a temporary 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
The Cavs responded in the home half of the inning as UVa-Wise tied the game up once again. Zoe Millard would single up the middle and then steal second to put the Cavs in scoring position. Ava Hockey then knocked an RBI single up the middle, scoring Millard.
UVa-Wise would have a six-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead. Bridget Henzel would walk on base before Samantha Ely singled to center field, placing Henzel on second. Miles would follow with a walk to load the bases for the Cavs. Concord would walk another runner as Creasey got on first, scoring Henzel. Back-to-back RBI singles by Smith and Monica Brandts would plate Ely and Miles. Pinch hitting for Zoe Millard, Madison David would hit a two-RBI single as she advanced to second base on the throw to drive home Smith and Creasey. Melissa Bartley would then enter the game to pinch run for Monica Brandts before a fly out to left field by Ava Hockey would drive home Bartley for the Cavs sixth run of the inning.
Miles was 1-for-2 with two runs while Smith went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
Taylor Brandts (11-5) earned the win for the Cavs as she scattered seven hits and fanned four in a complete game effort.
Concord's Darby Fitzpatrick fell to 8-6 on the season as she allowed eight hits and struck out two in four innings.
The Cavs stayed hot in game two with 11 runs on 13 hits in six innings.
The Mountain Lions took an early 1-0 lead once again as Witt doubled in pinch runner Dani Bloomingdale.
UVa-Wise would plate two in the bottom of the first to take the lead. A single up the middle by Miles followed by a Kaylee Jones walk would put the Cavs in position to score. Ely then hit an RBI single to left field as Jones advanced to third and Miles crossed home plate. Ely would then get on third on an error as Jones scored to put the Cavs up 2-1.
Concord would knot the game at 2-2 in the top of the third with an RBI single by Nicole Neri to score Kaitlyn Stewart.
UVa-Wise would respond in the bottom of the inning with a solo blast off the bat of Jones for a 3-2 lead.
Cavs would score again in the home half of the fourth as Lucindy Lawson added another homerun for UVa-Wise.
Concord would make it a one-run game in the top of the fifth when Neri singled through the left side to plate Lauren Blunt.
UVa-Wise would take the ball game in the bottom of the sixth frame as the Cavs pushed across seven runs. Back-to-back singles by Lawson and Smith would put runners on first and second for the Cavs. Creasey then singled as Smith advanced to third and Lawson scored on an error. Creasey would then steal second as Madison David singled up the middle, advancing to second on the throw, allowing Smith and Creasey to score. A single by Hockey would place runners in the corners for UVa-Wise. Miles then hit a single to center field and advanced to second on the throw, putting Hockey on third base and David across home plate. Ely then hit a two-RBI triple to center field to plate Miles and Hockey before an RBI single by Smith scored Ely and earned UVa-Wise the sweep of the Mountain Lions.
Miles went 2-for-24 with two runs and an RBI while Ely was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Lawson was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI as Smith went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Kailyn Spencer improved to 4-4 with the win as she scattered six hits and struck out two in five innings inside the circle.
The Mountain Lions' Rachel Pritchard fell to 3-9 on the season with the loss, allowing 13 hits with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
UVa-Wise will now face Shepherd University on Friday, April 13, for a conference road game. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
