CHARLESTON, W. Va. - - UVa-Wise survived a hard-fought battle against the Pioneers of Glenville State on Wednesday night as the Cavaliers earned an 89-83 overtime victory.
The Pioneers (8-21) made a late run in regulation to tie the ball game at 72 apiece and force the contest into overtime. Â In overtime, the Cavaliers (14-15) took over sustaining the lead for all five minutes.
UVa-Wise and Glenville would exchange buckets for the majority of the first half with a 3-pointer by senior guard DeMarcus Edwards tying the game up at 21-21 with 10:46 to go.
The Cavs would take their largest lead of the half, 36-29, behind a 3-pointer by senior forward Taiwo Badmus at the 2:11 mark. The Pioneers would sneak back in only down two, 36-34, heading into halftime.
Sophomore guard Chance Sheffey and Edwards led all scorers at the half with nine points apiece. Sophomore point guard Michal Seals collected eight points, four assists, and three steals while Badmus netted six points and added 12 rebounds in the opening half.
The Cavs shot 37.1 percent (13-for-35) from the floor and 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from beyond the arc in the first. The Pioneers outrebounded UVa-Wise 23-19 to start the game and shot 41.9 percent from the floor led in scoring by Elisha Mayberry who had six.
UVa-Wise would go up by as much as 13 points putting the score at 54-41 behind a slam by Badmus with 14:33 on the clock. A pair of free throws by Badmus would put the Cavs up by 15 points, 60-45, with just under 12 minutes left in regulation.
Up by 12 points with just over four minutes to play, the Pioneers crawled back into the game down just two points, 72-70, with less than a minute to go. Nunn's jumper would knot the game at 72 apiece as the two teams went into overtime.
Sheffey would knock down a three to open up overtime and put the Cavs up 75-72. A couple of free throws by freshman forward Jordan Pointer would put UVa-Wise up five, 83-78, with a little less than two minutes to play in overtime.
A total of six made free throws by Seals, senior guard Ricardo Hill Jr. and sophomore forward Yesid Mosquera-Perea would allow the Cavs to take a six-point lead and give the Cavs an 89-83 victory over Glenville State.
UVa-Wise finished the game shooting 40.8 percent from the floor and 45.2 percent from downtown. Badmus led all scorers with 30 points alongside 14 rebounds and two steals. Sheffey followed with 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Seals netted 15 points with five rebounds and a career-high six steals in the win.
The Pioneers shot 38.8 percent from the field in the loss with 21 points from Nunn and 17 points from Jon Dunmyer. Brooks Ely collected a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds in the loss.
UVa-Wise will now play Friday at noon against No. 2 Wheeling Jesuit inside the Charleston Civic Center.
