Gobbi's Late Goal Propels Cavs to Win in Season Opener

WISE - - Kristin Gobbi's goal with 2:04 to play proved to be the difference as UVa-Wise claimed a 13-12 non-conference victory over Catawba College in NCAA Division II women's lacrosse action at Smith Stadium Sunday.

The goal was the fourth of the game for Gobbi who joined McKayla Grasham (3) and Jesse French (3) with hat tricks on the day.

UVa-Wise (1-0) took advantage of the physical nature of Sunday's contest. The Cavaliers scored two goals off four Catawba (1-2) yellow cards.

The two schools traded goals over the final 23:35 minutes of action as the game was tied five times in the second half.

Catwaba tied the contest on Imani Gray's free position shot with 4:51 to play for her second goal of the game.

The Indians would make a charge to the net with 2:30 only to see Lauren Donahue force a turnover and give the Cavs possession. Seconds later, Becky Frost was assessed a yellow card which set up Gobbi's game-winning goal.

Sydney Steinberg finished with four points for UVa-Wise as the Gainesville, Fla. native handed out three assists in the season opener.

Steinberg and Donahue had five groundballs each while goalie Melanie Reilly tallied nine groundballs and 13 saves. Donahue added four caused turnovers to join Abby Willis for team-high honors in the category.

Next up, UVa-Wise will play its second consecutive SAC opponent when Tusculum visits Smith Stadium Wednesday at 4 p.m.
