Cavaliers Outlast Notre Dame to Win Fifth-Straight

WISE - - Redshirt senior forward Taiwo Badmus netted 31 points on 10-for-19 shooting to help drive the Cavaliers to a 94-84 win over Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon. The day also recognized Senior Day with four members of the men's basketball team honored in Badmus, Ricardo Hill, Jr., Corey Dick, and DeMarcus Edwards.

UVa-Wise (13-13, 11-9 MEC) would make a quick 4-0 run to start the game but consistent 3-point shooting by the Falcons put Notre Dame up 21-14 with 13:31 on the clock in the first half. The Falcons would maintain the lead until a tip-in by Badmus tied up the ball game at 29 apiece at the 7:23 mark.

The Falcons (5-21, 3-17 MEC) would take the lead again but a 3-pointer by sophomore forward Yesid Mosquera-Perea tied the game up once again, 34-34, with a little over five minutes to go in the opening half.  UVa-Wise and Notre Dame would head into the half with the Falcons up 42-37.

The Cavaliers finished the half with 15 points off the bench and 12 points inside the paint. Badmus led the Cavs with 10 points and five rebounds in the first half. Hill and sophomore guard Chance Sheffey netted seven points to start the game.

UVa-Wise hit 13-of-32 field goals (40.6 percent) in the opening half, making just 5-of-17 shots (29.4 percent) from downtown.

Notre Dame's Drew Scarberry led all scorers with 11 points hitting all three of 3-point shots attempted. Angelo Cugini followed with eight points. The Falcons shot 46.7 percent (14-for-30) from the field in the first half, connecting on 10-of-17 shots (58.8 percent) from downtown.

The Falcons maintained the lead to start the second half, with a 3-pointer by Badmus tying the game up 52-52 with 14:14 to play. Sheffey would extend the Cavs lead to five with another 3-point shot, 57-52,  at the 12:15 mark.

Notre Dame's Kayuta Taylor would connect on a three, but Seals would respond at the other end and hit a 3-point shot to give the Cavaliers a 62-61 lead with 10 minutes to play. The Cavs and Falcons would continue to exchange leads before a three by Edwards gave the Cavs a 75-74 lead with just under five minutes to play.

The Cavs would keep the lead for the remainder of the contest following that shot, as UVa-Wise earned a 94-84 victory over the Falcons. Badmus posted 21 points in the second half followed by Seals who had 17 to close out the half.

The Falcons shot 43.1 percent (25-for-58) from the field in the game with Taylor leading the team in scoring with 28 points followed by Scarberry who had 20 points. Notre Dame's Cugini finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

UVa-Wise went 29-for-62 (46.8 percent) from the floor led by Badmus who had a double-double of 31 points and 14 rebounds. The London, England native added four assists, three blocks, and two steals. Seals finished with 22 points for the Cavaliers while Hill had 10 points in the win. Sheffey netted 14 points while Mosquera-Perea also recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Cavaliers will have two road tests against Charleston on Wednesday and Concord on Saturday before closing out the regular season.
