Cavalier Women Keep Tournament Hopes Alive with Comeback Win

WISE - - UVa-Wise kept its Mountain East Conference Tournament hopes alive with a 67-62 women's basketball overtime victory over Urbana University at the Prior Center Thursday. Sophomore Cynita Webb scored 17 points and grabbed 17 rebounds with 11 of the points and 11 of the rebounds coming in the second half or overtime.

UVa-Wise (6-18, 5-14 MEC) finished the game on a 9-4 scoring spurt to claim the win. Webb teamed with freshman Bianca Lockamy to score the game's final five points at the charity stripe to move the Cavaliers within two games of the final tournament berth with three games to play.

Urbana (11-12, 9-10 MEC) held a 44-29 lead after three quarters before the wheels began to fall off.

UVa-Wise began implementing a full-court press in the fourth quarter and forced 10 Urbana turnovers in the process. The extra possessions led to eight points for the Cavs who shot 52.6 percent from the field in the quarter.

Webb gave her team its first lead of the game with 37 seconds to play in regulation with a layup off an Adalmaryz Rivera-Gomez assist to make the score 55-54.

A possession later, Sylvia Hudson split a pair of free throws to tie the game before each school missed on opportunities to win the game in regulation over the closing seconds.

The Blue Knights dominated the early portion of the game, limiting the Cavs to 9-of-44 shooting over the opening 30 minutes before allowing UVa-Wise to make 10-of-19 field goal attempts in the fourth quarter.

Three Urbana players fouled out in the game, including Hudson and Jazmyn Halen who each registered a double-double. Hudson finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Haley posted a team-high 18 points and 11 rebounds in the defeat.

Lockamy finished with 12 points and two steals in the win to aid her team to 11 thefts. Kalee Johnson and Webb had three steals each while Rivera-Gomez handed out seven assists.

UVa-Wise has now won back-to-back games for the first time this season and will attempt to win three in a row when Notre Dame College visits the Prior Center for a 2 p.m. tip Saturday.
