Michal Seals' Triple-Double Leads Cavs to Emphatic Win Over Glenville State

WISE - - A triple-double by junior guard Michal Seals along with four career days for UVa-Wise men's basketball led to an emphatic 105-82 victory over Glenville State College Saturday afternoon. Seals finished his second ever triple-double with 24 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and 13 assists.

With a number of recent injuries, UVa-Wise (5-5, 3-3 MEC) was only able to utilize eight players in their double-digit win over the Pioneers. Along with Seals, three other members of the men's team saw career-highs led by sophomore forward Jordan Pointer who posted a career-high 19 points and 19 boards.

Freshman forward Kaeleb Carter posted a season and career-high 18 points along with seven rebounds while fellow freshman forward Josh Thomas had a season and career-high nine points and seven boards.

Freshman guard Briggs Parris recorded 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc. Senior guard Rahji Langford registered nine points and five assists while junior guard Chance Sheffey added seven points, five rebounds, and four assists in the Cavaliers win.

UVa-Wise would give up the lead just twice in the first five minutes of the contest before a three by Seals put the Cavs ahead 9-7 at the 15:25 mark. The Cavs would go on a 9-0 run to pull ahead 18-7 with 13:38 on the clock and would continue to put points on the board taking a 28-9 lead with 11:15 left in the first half.

UVa-Wise would maintain a double-digit advantage over the Pioneers (5-4, 2-4 MEC), earning their largest lead of the half on a pair of free throws by Seals to go up by 20 points, 39-19, with a little over six minutes to play. A three-pointer by Parris would push the margin back to 20-points for UVa-Wise late in the first half, 47-27. The Cavs would go into the half ahead of Glenville State, 53-36.

Glenville State managed to convert on turnovers with 11 points off of turnovers to three points for the Cavs. UVa-Wise had 24 points inside the paint while the Pioneers posted 18. The Cavs also put up 25 points on fast breaks to just eight points for Glenville State. The Cavs recorded 34 boards and shot 46.8 percent (22-for-47) from the floor, 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from beyond the arc in the opening half.

A trio of three-point shots by Seals, Carter, and Sheffey would push the Cavs margin to 24 points for a 69-45 lead with 15:59 to go. A jumper by Thomas with 9:34 on the clock would give UVa-Wise their largest lead of the game, up 31 points over the Pioneers, 89-58.

UVa-Wise would stay ahead of Glenville State by at least 20 points for the remainder of the contest, going on to earn a dominating 105-82 win over the Pioneers.

In the second half, Glenville State posted 24 points in the paint to just 16 for the Cavs. UVa-Wise shot 44.4 percent (20-for-45) from the floor while the Pioneers shot 43.9 percent (18-for-41) from the field in the half.

UVa-Wise posted a 45.7 (42-for-92) field goal percentage in the game, connecting on 17-of-36 shots (47.2 percent) from downtown. Glenville State shot just 36.9 percent (31-for-84) from the field and went 9-for-37 (24.3 percent) from beyond the arc.

Blake Mellinger's squad will return to action at the top of the year for a non-conference matchup against Carson-Newman University on Jan. 2 on the road. Tip is slated for 7:30 p.m.
