Golden Eagles Ride Defense to Win Over Cavalier Women

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - - NCAA Division I transfer Raziyah Ferrington netted a game-high 19 points as the University of Charleston used a stifling defense to claim a 72-55 Mountain East Conference victory over UVa-Wise Saturday afternoon.

Charleston (7-1, 4-0 MEC) forced 29 turnovers and scored 28 points off turnovers while limiting UVa-Wise (3-4, 2-2 MEC) to 28.6 percent shooting for the game.

The Golden Eagles broke open a six point game at halftime by outscoring the guests 39-28 in the final 20 minutes en route to the team's seventh consecutive victory.

Farrington was joined in double figure scoring by Gracie Roberts (13), Dionna Sanders (13) and Anna Hayton (12) as the hosts shot 13-of-24 in the second half en route to a 51 percent showing for the game.

Despite struggling to crack the Charleston defense, UVa-Wise did enjoy a 39-26 rebounding advantage by limiting the Golden Eagles to six offensive rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Kalee Johnson led the Cavaliers with 11 points off the bench while junior Cynita Webb tallied 10 points despite playing just 18 minutes due to foul trouble.

Next up, UVa-Wise will travel to West Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
