PIKEVILLE, Ky. - - Men's basketball played their second and final exhibition game of the season Tuesday night, taking on the Bears of the University of Pikeville on the road. UVa-Wise was outlasted by the Bears, 81-67.
Junior Michal Seals led UVa-Wise in scoring with 15 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Cameron Whiteside added 12 points while freshman Briggs Parris finished with 10 points and two steals. Junior Chance Sheffey posted eight points and five rebounds while fellow junior Eric Okenchi had eight points and four rebounds on the night.
The Cavaliers struggled to score early, giving Pikeville a 21-point lead with 13:38 on the clock, 24-3. Pikeville sustained a double-digit lead throughout the first half as UVa-Wise went into halftime down 17 points, 49-32. The Bears went up by as much as 22 points in the first half, shooting 55.9 percent from the floor and totaling 21 rebounds. UVa-Wise shot just 36.1 percent from the floor with 17 rebounds. Whiteside led the Cavs in scoring in the first half with 12 points while Seals posted seven points and four rebounds to start.
Briggs Parris would open the second half for the Cavs knocking down back-to-back threes to cut the Bears' lead to 11 points, 49-38, with 19:29 on the clock. UVa-Wise would get within 10 points on a shot by Seals with 16:09 to go, 54-44. A three by Seals would cut the Cavs deficit to six points, 57-51, at the 14:03 mark. Josh Thomas would score to get UVa-Wise within one point, 62-61, with 8:15 on the clock. The Bears would quickly shift momentum to regain a double-digit lead with just under four minutes to play. Pikeville would keep that lead as the Bears went on to win 81-67.
UVa-Wise shot 39.7 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from the free throw line. The Cavs tallied 39 total rebounds with seven assists and five steals.
Pikeville went 45.5 percent from the floor with 44 rebounds and 19 turnovers.
The Cavalier men will have a quick turnaround as they begin regular season play on the road in Institute, West Virginia to compete in the 2018 Earl Lloyd Classic. UVa-Wise will first take the court against Livingstone College on Friday with tip scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
