Slow Start Proves Costly as Cavs Fall to 1-1 in MEC Play

WISE - - Notre Dame College limited UVa-Wise to 31 percent shooting as the Falcons began the game on a 22-4 run to post a 64-53 Mountain East Conference women's basketball victory at the Prior Center Monday.

Notre Dame (3-2, 1-1 MEC) used its defense and rebounding advantage to bolt to a 20-4 lead after the first period. Lauren Macer's team made 8-of-18 field goals in the opening 10 minutes while holding UVa-Wise (2-3, 1-1 MEC) to 2-of-19 in the opening quarter. The Falcons also corralled 23 rebounds while holding the Cavaliers to six in the opening period.

UVa-Wise never recovered as the visitors led by at least nine points throughout the first three quarters.

Jamie Cluesman's team made a run in the final stanza as back-to-back buckets by Hanna Oliver cut the lead to 10 before a free throw pushed the Notre Dame advantage to 11 with 3:38 to play. A 3-pointer by Judy Kaylnn Cummings made it an eight point game with 3:20 remaining only to see the visitors score five of the game's final seven points to claim the 11-point triumph.

Notre Dame's Seina Adachi led all players with 15 points while Katie Karalic netted 13 points and Jessi Stout recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
