Third Quarter Proves Costly as Cavalier Women Drop Season Opener

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - - Host West Chester University used a 23 point third quarter to break open a four point game at the half to post a 71-57 win over UVa-Wise on day one of the Carol Eckman Classic.

The game was the coaching debut Jamie Cluesman whose Cavaliers (0-1) trailed 34-30 at intermission behind the play of junior forward Cynita Webb.

Webb scored 10 of her team-high 18 points and grabbed 11 of her game-high 19 rebounds in the first 20 minutes as the guests played a West Chester (1-0) team who is receiving votes in the Preseason Atlantic Region Poll step-for-step in the first half.

The Golden Rams took control in the third quarter as guard Destiny Jefferson netted eight of her game-high 20 points in the period. West Chester limited the guests to 3-of-11 shooting in the 10 minute stanza; UVa-Wise was also plagued by poor free throw shooting as the team made just 5-of-10 attempts in the quarter.

With Webb on the bench with foul trouble, the Golden Rams opened up a 16 point lead at the midway point of the fourth quarter before claiming the 12-point triumph.

Sophomore Hanna Oliver was the only other Cav to finish in double figure scoring as she made a trio of 3-pointers en route to 11 points. Senior Alle Moore was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and 3-for-3 from the foul line to record nine points. UVa-Wise finished the game 13-for-26 from the stripe, including an 11-21 showing in the second half.

West Chester received 30 points from its bench, led by Zhane Snow's 18 points. Jefferson added five steals and six rebounds in the win.

Both teams will be back in action tomorrow for the final day of the Carol Eckman Classic. UVa-Wise will face Millersville University at 1 p.m.
