FAIRMONT, W.Va. - - Fairmont State used a perfect fourth quarter at the free throw line to upend UVa-Wise 74-68 in Mountain East Conference women's basketball action at Joe Retton Arena Thursday night. The Falcons finished the game 19-for-21 at the charity stripe but it was a perfect 14-for-14 showing in the fourth quarter that helped the hosts claim their second league win of the season.
Fairmont State (6-6, 2-5) had seen its lead cut to three with just under two minutes to play before answering with a 9-to-1 scoring spurt to put the game away.
UVa-Wise (2-10, 1-6) had got back in the game after Falcons' coach Steve McDonald was assessed a technical foul with 2:32 to play and his team holding a 61-51 advantage. The Cavs would make 4-of-5 free throws in the stretch before junior guard Adalmaryz Rivera – Gomez canned a 3-pointer from the corner to get the visitors within one possession.
The game started with a flurry of offensive as Fairmont State made five 3-pointers in the opening 10 minutes en route to building a 20-16 lead. Falcons' freshman Sierra Kotchman made three triples in the period as part of her game-high 23-point effort.
Kotchman's team struggled to put the ball in the hoop in the second quarter as FSU made just 1-of-8 long range attempts as the team made just 28.6 percent of its field goal attempts in the quarter.
Despite the offensive struggles, Fairmont State maintained its advantage through its defense. UVa-Wise made just three field goals in the quarter as the two teams played even in the 10 minute segment at 10-10.
A 3-pointer by the Cavs' Hanna Oliver would get the lead to 30-29 in the opening moments of the second half before the Falcons posted an 8-0 scoring run to make the score 38-29.
UVa-Wise countered with a run of its own as Cynita Webb followed a Judy Kaylynn Cummings 3-pointer with a layup inside to make the score 38-35 with 4:53 to play in the period.
The FSU lead would stay within two possessions for the remainder of the quarter before the hosts salted the game away at the free throw line down the stretch.
Freshman Ada Stanley had the best game of her young career in the loss. The Nokesville, Va. native scored a season-high 12 points while adding six rebounds and three assists. Stanley was one of five Cavs in double-figure scoring. Bianca Lockamy finished with 11 points while adding three steals while Oliver and Rivera – Gomez had 10 points each. Webb notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Kelli Jo Harrison (12) and Rachel Laskody (10) joined Kotchman in double-figure scoring for FSU.
UVa-Wise will be back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shepherd University.
