Cavs Fall on the Road to Fairmont State, 91-69

FAIRMONT, W. Va. - - The Cavalier men opened up 2018 with a tough loss to Fairmont State University, 91-69, on Thursday night. The Cavs (6-7, 4-3 MEC) could not overcome a poor first half of shooting, going just 12-for-35 (34.3 percent) from the field, while the Fighting Falcons (9-4, 5-2 MEC) hit 13 shots from downtown.

The Cavs managed to cut the lead to just four points, 14-10, early in the game with 14:49 left in the first half. Falling behind early, UVa-Wise was unable to attain a lead throughout the game. The Falcons gained a double-digit lead at the 10:30 mark in the first half, 21-10, and did not let up as Fairmont maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the contest.

Redshirt senior forward Taiwo Badmus would close out the first half with a three-pointer to head into halftime with the Falcons up 48-28. The Falcons hit 19-of-38 shots from the floor in the first half, making six shots from three-point range.

UVa-Wise would rally but could not make a comeback over the Fighting Falcons in the second half. The Cavs were able to get within 12 points, 68-56, with 8:31 to go. Fairmont continued to stay aggressive, downing the Cavaliers, 91-69.

The Cavs improved shooting in the second half, going 19-for-38 (50.0 percent) from the field. The Falcons went 16-for-33 (48.5 percent) from the floor in the second half, making seven shots from beyond the arc.

Sophomore point guard Michal Seals and Badmus both collected 18 points apiece with Seals narrowly missing a double-double recording nine rebounds. Badmus added eight rebounds and three blocks. The Cavs went 31-for-73 (42.5 percent) from the field and hit just three shots from beyond the arc. The rebound battle was tied up for the Cavs and Falcons with both teams grabbing 41 boards.

Fairmont's Vonte Montgomery, Caleb Davis, and R.J. Hutcherson all netted 15 points for the Falcons. Davis recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds. The Falcons went 35-for-71 (49.3 percent) from the floor and were assisted by 37 points off the bench.

The Cavalier men will continue their road trip taking on Shepherd University on Saturday, Jan. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
