WISE - - Freshman Jesse French scored four goals while sophomore Emily Henneberry handed out five assists in UVa-Wise's 19-8 Mountain East Conference women's lacrosse victory over West Virginia Wesleyan Friday at Carl Smith Stadium. The victory guarantees the Cavaliers of no worse than the No. 3 seed in next week's league tournament.
The brightest moment of the game for West Virginia Wesleyan (4-10, 2-3 MEC) came in the opening moments when Natalie Schaffner scored a woman-up goal to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead with 25:37 to play in the first half.
UVa-Wise (11-4, 3-1 MEC) responded with an 8-0 scoring run to take command of the contest. Junior Rachel Cole and sophomore Sydney Steinberg each scored a pair of goals in the stretch as French scored two of her game-high four goals as well.
The Bobcats would get within 10-5 late in the first half thanks to three goals by Kim Lubic only to see Ashley Wells score on a free position opportunity just before the first half horn sounded to send the Cavs to intermission leading 11-5.
Mid-way through the second half, Henneberry put the running clock into effect when her goal at the 10:25 mark gave UVa-Wise a 17-7 lead.
Seven Cavs scored in the win, including hat tricks from Henneberry, sophomore Kristin Gobbi, Cole and French.
Henneberry and Steinberg stuffed the stat sheet; Henneberry finished with three goals, five assists and five groundballs while Steinberg had two goals, two assists and a game-high six groundballs.
UVa-Wise wraps up the regular season Sunday at 1 p.m. at home against Shepherd University.
