SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - - Visiting UVa-Wise scored the first three goals of the game and never looked back in posting a 22-3 Mountain East Conference women's lacrosse victory over Notre Dame College at Normandy Field Friday. It was the Cavaliers' seventh road win of the season as Meghan Dennehy's squad improved to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Junior Hannah Marshall opened the scoring less than a minute into the contest as the Atlanta, Ga. native scored unassisted to stake UVa-Wise to a lead it would never relinquish.
Moments later junior Rachel Cole scored off an assist from freshman Jesse French to extend the lead to 2-0. Sophomore Kristin Gobbi capped the early 3-0 run with an unassisted goal at the 23:02 mark of the opening half.
Notre Dame (2-8, 0-3 MEC) halted the onslaught momentarily when Darbie Barkman scored with 22:49 to play in the half.
The momentum would be short lived as five different Cavaliers would score as part of a 5-0 run to stretch the advantage to 8-1 with 11:50 to go before intermission.
Again, the Falcons would briefly stem the tide with a goal by Ashlee Boyko only to see the Cavs rattle off the final two goals of the half, one each by Gobbi and Ashley wells to take a 10-2 lead to halftime.
The duo of McKayla Grasham and Sydney Steinberg would force the game into a running clock in the opening minutes of the second half. Grasham scored less than two minutes into the half before the Baltimore native handed out an assist on a Steinberg goal to put the running clock into effect with UVa-Wise holding a 12-2 lead with 28:11 to play.
The flurry continued as Steinberg scored three of her game-high four goals in the second half to aid the visitors to 12 second half goals.
Notre Dame's only goal of the second half came from Boyko at the 23:05 mark to cut her team's deficit to 10 at the 13-3 with 23:05 to play in the half.
The Cavs finished the game on a 9-0 run to cruise to the 22-3 triumph.
Led by Grasham's four goals, a quartet of UVa-Wise players tallied hat tricks in the contest as Wells, Gobbi and Catherina Dina recorded three goals each.
French, Grasham and Marshall netted two goals each in what was the team's highest scoring output of the season.
Cole dished out a game-high three assists while Grasham led all players with four groundballs and four caused turnovers. Marshall tacked on a game-best five draw controls to her two goals.
The Cavs dominated every aspect of the game as the guests finished with 26 shots on goals compared to eight for the Falcons. UVa-Wise also won the groundball battle 14 to 12 and picked up 18 draw controls against 10 for Notre Dame College.
Next up for the Cavs is a non-conference tilt at Ursuline College Sunday. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Pepper Pike, Ohio.
