NEWBERRY, S.C. - - Sophomore Sydney Steinberg registered a career-high 10 points as UVa-Wise improved to 4-1 on the year with a 21-6 shellacking of host Newberry at Setzler Field Tuesday. Steinberg's career day was highlighted by four of her six assists coming in a first half that saw the Cavaliers build a 12-4 lead.
The best part of Newberry's (3-4) day was the first ten minutes of the game. The Wolves took a 3-0 lead behind goals by Maddie Campbell, Rachel Dillon and Alexis Kahler.
From there, it was all downhill as UVa-Wise (4-1) scored the next nine goals over a 20 minute stretch to take command of the game.
The scoring spurt featured two goals each from Catherine Dina, Steinberg and McKayla Grasham. By halftime, the lead had ballooned to eight as Dina turned in a hat trick in the game's opening 30 minutes.
After freshman Jesse French scored the second half's opening goal to make it a 13-4 lead, Newberry responded with a pair of goals to make the score 13-6 with just over 23 minutes remaining.
It would be as close as the hosts would get as coach Meghan Dennehy's club ended the game with eight consecutive goals to cruise to the 21-6 win.
Dina joined Steinberg with a game-high four goals while French and Grasham added three goals each. Hannah Marshall and Kristin Gobbi found the back of the net twice while Ashley Wells and Annie Hanson joined Cole with one goal scored.
The Cavs finished with 26 groundballs in the road victory, led by goalkeeper Melanie Reilly's game-high seven. Reilly added 14 saves as she ran her record in goal to 4-1.
UVa-Wise finished with 11 more shots than Newberry, 36-25, while also going 16 for 18 in clear attempts.
Dillon led the Wolves with three goals while Campbell added a team-high five groundballs in the loss.
The Cavs will be off until next Thursday when the team battles Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn. First draw is scheduled for 5 p.m.
